The Medical Technician (LPN) is responsible for the medication administration of the assigned nursing unit (long-term care or skilled care). This position reports directly to the Director of Nursing and follows standard nursing procedures and facility policies for administering medication.
This role involves splitting shifts as a Charge Nurse and Med Tech, and requires the ability to work with residents/patients, nursing staff, and other personnel effectively.
Key Responsibilities:- Administer medication by oral, rectal, topical, inhalation, eye, or ear routes under the supervision of a registered nurse, following facility policies.
- Maintain medication cart and ensure storage areas are clean, organized, and secured.
- Obtain permission from a licensed nurse before administering PRN medications.
- Perform counts of non-narcotic medications with another medication technician or licensed nurse at the beginning and end of each shift.
- Do not administer Schedule II drugs or sliding scale drugs.
- Monitor medication supply for each resident and coordinate with nursing staff for reorders.
- Take vital signs, including apical pulse, following proper procedure.
- Report any significant changes in resident condition or vital signs promptly to Charge Nurse or Supervisor.
- Document administered medications on the MAR according to facility policies.
- Work effectively despite frequent interruptions and emotionally challenging situations.
- Communicate clearly with medical staff, nursing personnel, and other department supervisors.
- Demonstrate passion for working with long-term care residents and skilled rehabilitation patients, providing excellent care.
