Band 6 Junior Sister/Charge Nurse - Children's Emergency Department

Main duties of the job
  • Act as the shift co‑coordinator, providing supervision and support to the multidisciplinary team.
  • Develop, manage and monitor the performance of a team of nurses, ensuring the highest standards of care and safety are achieved.
  • Promote effective communication and teamwork at all levels.
  • Demonstrate clinical leadership skills and specialist knowledge.
  • Assist the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in staff management, including human resources, clinical governance and risk management.
  • Contribute to the strategic and operational development of the department.
Person specification Education / training / experience
  • Registered paediatric nurse.
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development through NMC revalidation.
  • Evidence of achievement of an NMC‑approved mentorship qualification.
  • Minimum of 3 years acute‑care registered nurse experience.
  • UK‑recognised degree in nursing relevant to the post.
  • Post‑graduate qualification related to an area of practice.
Leadership and management
  • Able to prioritise own workload and that of others.
  • Demonstrates ability to maintain and contribute to the development of standards of practice and decision‑making in conjunction with team leaders.
  • Acts as a role model and leads by example to reinforce the Trust’s values and behaviours.
  • Supervises non‑registered and less‑experienced staff to ensure effective care delivery.
  • Escalates concerns appropriately to reduce risk and promote patient safety.
  • Experience managing clinical incidents and complaints.
  • Experience in the relevant specialty and substantive management of that clinical area.
Clinical practice
  • Knowledgeable of the skills needed to deliver a high‑standard of care in paediatric emergency practice.
  • Works under own initiative within the boundaries of the role.
  • Demonstrates awareness of the importance of teamwork.
  • Documents observations, results, decisions and actions effectively in patient notes and communicates to the multidisciplinary team.
  • Communicates effectively with patients, relatives and carers.
  • Supports education of learners and less‑experienced staff.
  • Manages, directs and evaluates nursing care for a defined caseload of patients.
  • Competent to administer intravenous medicines.
  • Competent in central venous access management.
