Overview
The lunchtime supervisors patrol and manage the play area, actively encouraging children to play, ensuring playground rules are followed, preventing disputes, and following the Play Policy. They contact the Head of School or Deputy Head if issues arise and are required to be present from 12:15pm to 1:15pm each day. There is a requirement to be First Aid trained, with training provided by the school on a three-year basis.
The role includes attendance at termly professional development on OPAL (Outdoor Learning and Play) as well as ongoing meetings and training sessions, for which overtime is paid. Sanctions will be administered under the school’s Behaviour Policy, and all lunchtime supervisors should have a copy of the OPAL Play Policy and Play Charter.
Job Purpose
The duties outside include patrolling the area, actively encouraging children to play, ensuring playground rules are followed, preventing disputes or fights, and contacting the Headteacher or Deputy Headteacher if required. Inside duties include ensuring children eat in a safe space, using good manners while eating, and clearing up before leaving the hall. All supervisors should assist in the first instance if a child is injured;
if further first aid is needed, a designated first aider will be contacted. Supervisors may reward good behaviour with stickers and will ensure children go to the hall to eat promptly when the bell rings for second sitting, and line up promptly after the final bell.
All lunchtime supervisors are to help in the first instance if a child has been in an accident or is hurt. If further first aid is needed the lunchtime supervisor will contact a designated first aider. All lunchtime supervisors may reward good behaviour with stickers. The lunchtime supervisors will ensure all children go into the hall to eat their packed lunch promptly when the bell rings for second sitting, and that all children line up promptly when the final bell for the end of lunchtime rings.
Areasof Responsibility
- v On dry days:
Two lunchtime supervisors will be in the hall, and the other lunchtime supervisors will be in separate places outside. - v On wet days: the lunchtime supervisors will frequently patrol each of the given classrooms ensuring that all children are in their own classrooms, unless they have a teacher’s permission to be elsewhere. The lunchtime supervisors will allow children to take part in any of the activities listed for this purpose and displayed in the classroom.
- The lunchtime supervisors will encourage a quiet but enjoyable atmosphere and will encourage children to be actively engaged in an activity either alone or with others.
- If working in Early Years, lunchtime supervisors will supervise the children, either outside or inside, line the children up, bring them back into the classroom and read them a story, prior to teaching staff returning to the classroom.
