The Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) is seeking a Supervisor, Bus Maintenance. Supervisor, Bus Maintenance is an Essential Personnel position that is at the supervisory, technical and administrative level of work in nature. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: planning, coordinating, and personnel forecasting for the servicing of MTA buses and other vehicles. The work of this classification also involves employee tracking, distribution of random drug and alcohol testing, labor relations, initiating new procedures and ideas, issuing of disciplinary actions, and executing provisions of MTA Rules, Regulations and Policies as well as provisions of the labor contract/s.

Bus Maintenance Supervisors directly supervise A, B and C Repair persons, and Cleaners. Bus Maintenance Supervisors receive general supervision from a Bus Maintenance Superintendent, and/or other designated officials. Bus Maintenance Supervisors are expected to carry assignments through completion independently. Existing rules, regulations, policies, and procedures govern the work, but Bus Maintenance Supervisors are to use considerable judgment in interpreting and applying them to unusual or non-standard situations.

The Supervisor, Bus Maintenance impacts the MTA's organizational success by:

  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise daily bus maintenance activities to meet operational line requirements.
  • Directly supervise A, B, and C Repair persons, Cleaners, and Maintenance Control Clerks.
  • Conduct daily shift meetings and provide instruction regarding shop rules, safety procedures, and operational expectations.
  • Review and update daily activity reports and preventive maintenance schedules using maintenance management systems (e.g., Maximo).
  • Coordinate with the Operations Control Center regarding service interruptions and road calls.
  • Review road call reports and ensure timely resolution.
  • Monitor workforce attendance and productivity, address manpower allocation to balance line requirements and preventive maintenance completion.
  • Issue disciplinary actions in accordance with MTA policies and applicable labor contracts.

Qualifications

Education: Graduation from a standard high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate.

Experience: Four years of experience in the repair, maintenance and inspection of heavy-duty automotive vehicles and equipment.

• Two (2) years of experience supervisory and/or lead experience overseeing staff, assigning and reviewing work, providing direction and guidance, and ensuring compliance with organizational policies and procedures.

• Selective Qualification recruitments are utilized when the position requires specific or additional bona fide occupational qualifications (knowledge, skill, or ability). No substitution is allowed for a selective qualification.

  • Additional experience as described above may be substituted for up to four years of the education requirement on a year for year basis.
  • Additional technical or vocational training may be substituted for up to two years of the experience requirement on a year for year basis.
  • Special Requirements
  • Employees are subject to twenty-four (24) hour call-in during special or weather events, emergency situations, or as deemed necessary.
  • Work is usually performed in a vehicle garage setting which may be hazardous.
  • Bus Maintenance Supervisors may be subject to travel and work outdoors at various locations throughout the MTA service area, in all types of weather conditions.
  • Although Supervisors are required to wear daily protective clothing and equipment (i.e. Uniforms; safety shoes; safety glasses; safety vest; etc) some assignments may require employees to wear additional protective clothing and or safety equipment.
  • Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with the Code of Federal Regulations 49
    - Federal Department of Transportation Drug Alcohol Testing Protocols and Federal Transit Administration Alcohol Testing Rules.
  • Licenses & Certifications

    Employees in this classification are assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees assigned such duties will be required to possess motor vehicle operator's license valid in the State of Maryland.
