Job Summary

Under general supervision, installs services and repairs all components or subcomponents of commercial and industrial heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems. Mechanics at this level install, diagnose problems, and repair commercial and industrial heat pumps and centralized air conditioning systems up to 250 tons with multiple zone applications.

Job Duties
  • Installs, operates, services, and repairs chiller plants up to 250 tons, diagnosing and replacing complex internal chiller controls and auxiliary components.
  • Operates, services, and repairs air handling and hydronic pumping systems of various designs.
  • Performs test and balance procedures on air and hydronic systems to determine required adjustments, ensuring optimal operation.
  • Tests water in cooling towers; adds chemicals to control alkalinity, algae, and scale. Tests water in closed-loop systems; adds chemicals to control corrosion and bio-growth.
  • Diagnoses, maintains, and repairs gas burners; replaces heat exchangers and component controls; tests and sets up burner operation for proper fuel-to-air ratios.
  • Maintains variable frequency drive applications on pumps and fans.
  • Services and repairs humidification systems utilizing steam and/or self-generated applications.
  • Services and repairs plumbing and electrical components of HVAC building systems.
  • Provides guidance and training in the HVAC trade to other maintenance personnel.
  • Performs all duties of the Temperature Control Mechanic and HVAC Mechanic I.
Requested

Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Six years of progressively responsible experience in air conditioning, refrigeration, temperature control, steam distribution, or heating trades.
Other Preferences for Consideration

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis, with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Thorough knowledge of air conditioning and refrigeration principles, practices, and techniques; refrigerant types, environmental impact, and gas reclamation procedures; OSHA regulations;
National Electrical Code; basic mathematics; plumbing, steamfitting, and electrical trades related to HVAC systems. Skill in installation, repair, and maintenance of commercial or industrial HVAC equipment; welding, brazing, soldering, silfoss; reading and interpreting blueprints, schematics, and specifications. Ability to read and understand manufacturer’s recommendations, use computers to diagnose HVAC problems, prepare written reports, communicate effectively both orally and in writing, work in various environments and heights up to 35 feet, manipulate heavy equipment and tools up to 50 pounds, use personal protective equipment, and work in hazardous or confined spaces.
