Class Definition

A Crime Laboratory Technician I learns to perform specialized crime laboratory work such as evidence detection, criminalistics, firearms, latent print examination or crime laboratory and crime scene photography. The work of this class involves no supervisory duties or responsibilities. Incumbents receive close supervision from a technical superior. Employees in this class work on a shift basis. Work is performed at crime locations where such conditions as the seasonal extremes of weather, dangerous City districts and violent or hostile individuals are encountered.

Work requires moderate physical exertion necessary to lift and move large and heavy materials and objects from crime sites; may be exposed to toxic fumes and chemicals when working in the analytical units of the Laboratory Division.

Minimum Qualifications

On or before the date of filing the application, each candidate must:

EDUCATION: Have graduated from an accredited high school or possession of a GED certificate.

AND

NOTE EQUIVALENCIES: Have an equivalent combination of education and experience.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATES: Have a valid Maryland Class C Noncommercial driver's license, or an equivalent out-of-state driver's license acceptable to the Office of Risk Management is required. Provisional driver’s license or learner permits are not acceptable. You must upload a copy of your valid driver’s license with application at time of applying.

Knowledges, Skills, And Abilities
  • Knowledge of the basic principles and techniques of chemistry, biology and physics.
  • Knowledge of the methods aims and techniques of laboratory analysis.
  • Ability to perform basic laboratory tests.
  • Ability to write basic laboratory reports.
  • Ability to maintain records and files.
  • Ability to deal effectively with others in chaotic situations.
Background Check

Note:

Those eligible candidates under final consideration for appointments to positions identified as positions of trust will be required to complete authorization for a Criminal Background Check and/or Fingerprint must be successfully completed.

Probation

All people, including current City employees, selected for this position must complete a mandatory one year probation.

Eligibility

Qualified candidates will be considered for vacancies as they arise, for a period of at least six months. The decision of the Director of Human Resources with respect to acceptable minimum qualifications is final.

Education Accreditation

Applicants’ education must be obtained from an accredited institution. Education credentials obtained out of the US must be evaluated for US equivalency. Evaluation agencies information may be obtained es.org.
