Security Guard
Security Officer General Summary Ensures a safe environment for patients, staff, and visitors. Patrols hospital property, responds to calls for assistance, and reports on conditions, objects, or persons that may impact the security and/or safety of patients, staff, physicians, visitors lawm fem, or vendors. Mentors and trains security staff; assumes charge role as needed. Security Officers work 24/7 and may need flexible scheduling and off‑shifts.
May obtain and maintain State of Maryland and/or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department Special Police Officer commission for crime control duties, within the limitations of the Unarmed SPO commission. Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
- Immediately responds to emergencies to provide necessary assistance to employees and customers.
- Conducts designated security patrols throughout the facility as directed. May be required to patrol the hospital campus/grounds via security motor vehicle or bicycle.
- Monitors security and appearance of lobbies waiting areas elevators and entrances.
- Prepares and submits reports and logs of all incidents, investigations and activities. Maintains department records reports and files as required.
- Proficient in and utilizes nonviolent crisis intervention and de‑escalation techniques to ensure staff, patients, visitors and all others remain safe, calm and respected while onsite.
- Provides assistance for way‑finding parking deliveries and other requested information for the hospital and Med Star affiliates.
- Responds to security and medical code calls. Investigates incidents and accidents. Gathers information and evidence. Notifies appropriate authorities or superiors and calls for back‑up assistance as necessary.
- Testifies at legal proceedings hearings and trials.
- Works cross‑functionally to.power ensure safe and secure environments.
- Conducts foot security patrols of hospital buildings and grounds as required. Observes and monitors conditions, objects or persons which might require police action. Controls access to and inspects packages of those leaving buildings. Reports all safety security and law violations.
- Collects and secures patient valuables and lost‑and‑found articles.
- Monitors camera surveillance and other security technology systems as directed.
- Responds to circumstances where the exercise of law enforcement authority may be required.
- Interacts with פא visitors and maintains designated security posts throughout the facility as directed.
- Ensures quality outcomes for the security department by communicating with security staff and the public.
- Participates in meetings and committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts. Participates in multi‑disciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Associate's degree preferred.
Experience
- 1-2 years related security or law enforcement experience required, or 1-2 years Med Star service in lieu of security experience required.
- One year of relevant professional‑level work experience may be substituted for one year of required education.
- Valid driver's license (DL Number) required.
- MD Special Police Commission – MDSPC Commissioned as a Special Police Officer by the State of Maryland State Police and/or District of Columbia Metropolitan Police Department preferred.
- Special Police Officer – DC – SPO Commissioned as a Special Police Officer by the State of Maryland State Police and/or District of Columbiaisson Department preferred.
- If SPO must satisfy ongoing training requirements to maintain SPO commission in Maryland and/or DC required.
- IAHSS – Basic Certified Healthcare Security Officer (CHSO) certification from IAHSS preferred.
- CPR – Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (includes BLS and NRP) for healthcare providers from either the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross within 90 days required.
- Additional unit/specialty certifications may vary by department or business unit.
- Must successfully complete all Med Star initial training related to violence prevention, de‑escalation and crisis prevention intervention required.
- Verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to remain calm and thoughtful during a crisis.
- Ability to assist in de‑escalating situations with strong emotions and conflict.
- Basic computer skills preferred.
This position has a hiring range of USD $18.70 - USD $32.72 /Hr.
