Position: Campus Police Officer (Campus Security)

Overview

Johns Hopkins Public Safety is seeking a Campus Police Officer who will provide security services to the Peabody campus and off-campus facilities and activities. The Peabody campus consists of 12 buildings in mid-town Baltimore. JHPS Campus Police Officers are community and customer service oriented dedicated to providing a safe environment for students, staff, neighbors and visitors alike.

Note:

Primary shift is 11:00 PM to 7:00 AM. This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship. This position is a non-sworn, unarmed position within the current security organization. Shift assignments are determined by the needs of the department (assigned after training is complete).

Responsibilities
  • Uniformed patrols and crime prevention services to protect life and property.
  • Proactive support of student and staff initiatives.
  • Develop and maintain a positive rapport with students, faculty, staff, visitors and neighbors; coordinate with University administrators in preliminary and follow-up investigations of complaints.
  • Report criminal offenses and disruptions; enforce University policies and regulations, state laws and Baltimore City ordinances.
  • Oversee student monitors; write reports and keep records; monitor electronic surveillance equipment and key access control.
  • Work with shift work, some overtime, and potential schedule changes to meet security requirements.
  • Provide escorts and other general services, including locking and unlocking buildings and rooms.
  • Provide general security and customer service/informational services for Peabody on-campus activities, including events at the George Peabody Library and Peabody concerts and performances.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
  • Patrol assigned areas on foot.
  • Actively participate in crime prevention and community policing activities.
  • Respond to routine and emergency calls for various types of service and take action as appropriate.
  • Conduct investigations; maintain confidentiality while writing clear, concise and accurate reports.
  • Conduct security inspections of Peabody facilities and areas, reporting conditions as necessary.
  • Perform escorts and provide general security services.
  • Work flexible shifts including holidays and weekends to assist with operational and special event assignments.
  • Use various computers and equipment as a routine function of this position.
  • Place and secure locks as needed and other related security tasks.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or graduation equivalent.
  • Two years work experience. Must meet Maryland State Police requirements for a Special Police Commission and have an exemplary background and integrity; possess a valid U.S. motor vehicle driver's license; pass a university background check; maintain a clean driving record (no more than two current points).
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience, and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.

The referenced base salary range represents the low and high end of Johns Hopkins University's salary range for this position. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range. Exact salary will depend on factors including location, skills, experience, and education. Education and Experience Equivalency Please refer to the job description for permitted equivalencies. If permitted, equivalencies follow the JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate credits or 18 graduate credits may substitute for one year of experience. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college coursework may be applied toward the total minimum education/experience.
