Main Purpose of Job:
The Forensic Scientist Supervisor is responsible for the daily operations of the Biology Section s Technical Unit. This position oversees the activities of the Technical Unit forensic scientists and manages the validations and laboratory support with assistance from the Technical Leader (FSA) and Validation Coordinator (FSA). The employee is expected to perform minimal casework analysis and will review the work of scientists and can provide expert testimony.
The employee is often consulted in decisions affecting the entire Biology Section and may be asked to fill in for the other Biology Section Supervisors as needed. As a Forensic Scientist, the employee shall meet the qualifications and responsibilities listed in the DHMH COMAR regulations.

Oversee the Technical UnitOversee the Proficiency Testing Program for the Biology SectionReview Casework AnalysisSuccessfully complete proficiency tests according to the documented scheduleUndergo training and competency testingAnnual Review of the Biology Section Quality System as required by the FBI Quality Assurance StandardsAnnual review of casework and database files as required by the FBI Quality Assurance StandardsCoordinate with the Forensic Scientist Manager, other Biology Supervisors, and other Unit Supervisors within the Forensic Sciences Division on issues involving Forensic BiologyMINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Qualifications
Education: A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry, biology, biochemistry, genetics, medical technology, pharmaceutical science or related physical, natural or forensic science from an accredited college or university.Experience: Five years of experience in comparative analysis or scientific evaluation of evidence in the discipline supervised including experience in providing testimony as an expert witness in moot or criminal court.Notes: 1. Candidates may substitute additional experience performing comparative analysis or scientific evaluation of evidence to include experience in providing expert testimony, on a year-for-year basis for the required education.
2. Candidates may substitute additional experience at another accredited crime laboratory performing equivalent work, on a year-for-year basis, for the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Master s degree in any of the above referenced disciplines from an accredited college or university for one year of the required experience.
4. Candidates may substitute the possession of a Doctorate degree in any of the above referenced disciplines from an accredited college or university for two years of the required experience.SELECTIVE QUALIFICATIONS
Selective Qualifications
Education: Applicants must have successfully completed a minimum of (3) courses in the subject areas of Biochemistry, Genetics and Molecular Biology for a total of (9) cumulative semester hours. Additionally, applicants must have successfully completed coursework covering Statistics and/or Population GeneticsExperience:
Four of the five years of the experience must be in comparative analysis or scientific evaluation of forensic biological evidence to include experience in courtroom testimony as expert witness in moot or criminal court.DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Preferred Qualifications Work experience in an ISO 17025-accredited laboratoryExperience as a Technical Assessor for ANAB, A2LA and/or FBI QASExpert witness testimony in serology, DNA and/or admissibility hearingsTwo years as a supervisor or lead examiner in a forensic workplace preferentially DNA focusAmerican Board of Criminalist certification (emphasis in Molecular Biology)LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS
