The Division of Emergency Medicine in the Department of Pediatrics at the Johns Hopkins University is seeking a Nurse Practitioner for the Pediatric Emergency Department. The successful applicant will have experience managing pediatric trauma and working within pediatric emergency department workflow.
Responsibilities- Perform patient-oriented tasks such as interviewing patients, taking medical histories, performing physical examinations, ordering laboratory tests, making tentative diagnoses, prescribing appropriate treatments, and performing appropriate procedures.
- Educate patients/participants and/or their families to promote wellness, prevent health problems, maintain current health, and intervene in acute or chronic illness.
- Ensure patient and physician calls are returned in a timely manner, and all patient interactions are documented appropriately in the Electronic Patient Record (EPR).
- Serve as a liaison between Pediatric Emergency Medicine, primary care providers, nurse case managers, inpatient personnel, and health care professionals in other specialties.
- Triage pages, respond as needed, or forward a detailed message to the appropriate physician.
- Answer questions from patients regarding physician instructions, medications, prescription refills, and other aspects of clinical care.
- Retrieve diagnostic results, coordinate physician sign-off of results, and call patients with results according to clinic protocol.
- Assume responsibility for own professional development and remain current in clinical practice by attending relevant continuing education programs.
- Be responsible and accountable for time management, professional relationships, and interpersonal interactions.
- Attend all departmental meetings regularly, assisting with an educational mission when necessary.
- Assess and or manage follow-up plans, specific to the age of the patient served.
- Give effective, complete, and accurate instructions regarding good health maintenance, including disease prevention and home health care, according to department guidelines and under the supervision of a physician.
- Record and document health assessment data necessary to maintain, coordinate and/or expedite required services.
- Act as a resource to health care staff and implement programs to improve the health status of patients/families, considering the developmental needs of parents and families.
- Consistently request consultations with appropriate departments when necessary.
- Master's Degree in Nursing.
- Registered Nurse license and certification as a Nurse Practitioner. Must be licensed as an NP in the State of Maryland or another state where practicing.
- Current CPR certification required.
- Maintain current licensure and certification during employment.
- Complete the JHH credentialing process prior to start date.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience; additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma or equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
This is a clinical operations position that will work in the Pediatric ED. The role is full‑time and essential staff; shifts may vary due to 24/7 service and may include weekends, days, evenings, and nights.
