Job Profile Summary

Under limited supervision, the Neonatal Nurse Practitioner is responsible for the clinical management of assigned neonates in the Newborn Intensive Care Unit and Intermediate Care Nursery, and is responsible under supervision for stand‑by at risk deliveries and neonatal resuscitation in the Labor and Delivery Room.

Education
  • Certified Nurse Practitioner Program or Physician Assistant
Licensure
  • Current registration with the Maryland State Board of Examiners of Nurses as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant
  • Heart saver (CPR Certification)
Experience
  • At least two years of experience in a Level III or Level IV NICU
Skills
  • A high level of analytical ability to assess patients and implement appropriate intervention.
  • Substantial interpersonal and verbal communication skills to effectively interact with staff, physicians, patients, and family members.
Responsibilities
  • Provide admission, daily, and discharge physicals on babies admitted to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and Intermediate Care Nursery. Handle infant problems and counsel parents regarding the infant’s care and needs.
  • Establish medical diagnosis for common short‑term or chronic stable health problems.
  • Evaluate and manage neonatal conditions, including:
    • Hyperbilirubinemia
    • Feeding problems
    • Methadone withdrawal/neonatal abstinence after stabilization
    • Transient respiratory problems
    • Dislocated and/or subluxated hips
    • Conjunctivitis
    • Dermatological problems
    • GU problems
    • Sepsis
    • Respiratory distress
    • Congenital heart disease
    • Anemia
    • Apnea
    • Hematologic problems
    • Hypoglycemia
  • Order, perform, and interpret laboratory tests, including but not limited to:
    • Blood work (CBC, sedimentation rate, Hgb, blood gases, electrophoresis, blood type and cross and match, Coombs, STS, VDRL, electrolytes, liver enzymes, thyroid function, viral antibody titers, direct and indirect bilirubin estimation)
    • Cultures (urine, blood, nasopharyngeal, throat, wound, rectal, stool, eye, CSF, other body fluids)
    • Examination of urine (urinalysis, microscopic examination, Gram stain, ferric chloride)
    • Examination of stool for occult blood
    • Hematocrits
    • Skin scrapings
    • Blood gases
    • Non‑invasive procedures (X‑rays, EKG, sonograms, EEG, CT scan, MRI)
  • Perform invasive procedures such as venipuncture, spinal tap, arterial punctures, arterial catheterization, endotracheal intubation, umbilical arterial/venous catheterization, thoracostomy, thoracentesis, urinary catheterization, suprapubic tap, paracentesis, central venous catheterization, and to prescribe drugs.
  • Prescribe non‑controlled substances independently or in collaboration with a physician, including:
    • Erythromycin 1% ophthalmic ointment
    • Vitamin K1
    • Glycerine suppository
    • Antibiotics
    • Mycostatin ointment & suspension
    • Anticonvulsants
    • Sympathomimetics
    • Vaso‑active agents
    • Vitamins
    • Electrolytes
    • Diuretics
    • Immunizations
    • Topical preparations
    • Blood & blood products
  • Implement therapeutic or corrective measures such as nasopharyngeal suctioning, chest PT, cleaning and dressing abrasions and minor lacerations, ligating extra digits, triple diapering, phototherapy, CPR, intubation, mechanical ventilation, thoracentesis, hyperalimentation, vaso‑active agents, paracentesis, oxygen therapy, and referrals to appropriate physicians.
  • Provide emergency care, including initiating CPR, administering O2, initiating an IV, intubating and ventilating, ordering medications, and attending deliveries when requested by obstetricians.
Pay Range

$38.64 – $64.33
