The Associate Director of Development is a frontline fundraiser responsible for qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major‑gift prospects. The role focuses on prospect research, strategy development, and stewardship across the major‑giving process, with a typical donor portfolio of $100,000+ gifts. Frequent travel and meetings on and off campus, including non‑traditional hours, are expected. The position is focused on a designated territory within the continental United States.
The Krieger School of Arts and Sciences (KSAS) seeks a major gift officer to join its external affairs team and secure philanthropic support for the school’s mission of education, research, and discovery.
Key Responsibilities- Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a prospect pool for new and existing annual and major gifts.
- Design and implement development strategies to build a portfolio, involving relevant colleagues where necessary.
- Determine annual work‑plan goals in consultation with departmental/divisional development leadership.
- Track fundraising activity in the CRM.
- Plan and execute solicitation strategies leading to annual and major gifts.
- Prepare proposals, solicitation letters, gift agreements, and other development materials that articulate Johns Hopkins University’s needs, values, and ambitions.
- Develop and maintain a comprehensive understanding of the department’s mission, history, and programs to communicate funding opportunities.
- Proactively communicate with major prospects and donors about giving opportunities to maximize gift and tax benefits.
- Complete in‑person and virtual donor visits each fiscal year; KPIs for visits will be set by leadership.
- Develop and participate in implementing annual stewardship plans for donors.
- Build strong, trust‑based partnerships with colleagues across the institution.
- Work with faculty and institutional leaders to engage them as fundraising partners in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting prospective donors.
- Staff, train, and guide internal stakeholders through the development process.
- Partner with team members on planning and executing development‑related activities such as professorship dedications, lectureships, and other stewardship events.
- Participate in team‑wide activities, meetings, events, and knowledge sharing.
- Represent the school/division on committees and institution‑wide programming where appropriate.
- Analyze data to identify prospects, demonstrate activity, and track progress toward work‑plan goals.
- Participate in special projects, programs, and initiatives as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Develop annual fundraising goals and objectives in consultation with KSAS leadership; create a development plan to research and identify new prospects, make discovery calls, and build a prospect pool.
- Build and manage a portfolio of 100–150 prospects with capacity for major and/or planned gifts.
- Plan and execute solicitation strategies leading to leadership annual and major gifts. Travel extensively throughout the assigned territory, completing at least 110 visits per year.
- Partner with the KSAS constituent engagement team to ensure event attendance in assigned territory, recruit support for key volunteers, and attend events when needed.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Three years of related experience, with at least one year of professional experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience; additional related experience may substitute for additional education beyond a high school diploma, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
- Advanced degree (Master’s or JD).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
