Overview

The Associate Director will report to the Director of Development and work with all members of the development team to achieve fundraising and stewardship goals for the Department of Medicine (DOM). The Associate Director is responsible for the identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of annual donors in support of research, patient care and education, fulfilling the tripartite missions of Johns Hopkins Medicine (JHM).

The Associate Director will be responsible for identifying and developing a strong pipeline of prospects for the DOM through the DOM Annual Fund. This position will manage a portfolio of existing annual donors (approximately 100 prospects) across DOM divisions with a focus on the solicitation of high-end annual gifts and moving donors to the major gift level with stewardship and communication responsibilities for this group.

The Associate Director will also be responsible for qualifying, cultivating, and stewarding new and/or unmanaged donors ($250 to $10,000) through calls, visits, and other personal communication to develop a robust pool of major and planned giving prospects, helping to transition donors to potential major gift solicitations, as appropriate. Additionally, the Associate Director will oversee direct response efforts for the DOM in an effort to grow the pipeline of philanthropic support.

  • Design and implement development strategies to build a portfolio, involving relevant colleagues where necessary.
  • Determine annual work plan goals in consultation with departmental/divisional development leadership.
  • Track fundraising activity in the CRM.
  • Plan and execute solicitation strategies leading to annual and major gifts.
  • Prepare proposals, solicitation letters, gift agreements, and other development materials for prospects and donors that articulate Johns Hopkins University's needs, values, and ambitions.
  • Develop and maintain comprehensive understanding of department or division mission, history, teaching, research, and/or clinical programs to effectively communicate funding opportunities. Learn and actively refresh knowledge of school/divisional/departmental collaborative partnerships, priorities, and shared goals.
  • Proactively communicate with major prospects and donors about specific ways to give, both current and deferred, to maximize gift and tax benefits.
  • Complete in-person and virtual donor visits each fiscal year. Goals for visits and other KPIs will be set by school/division/business unit leadership
  • Develop and participate in implementing annual stewardship plans for donors.
  • Develop and maintain strong, trust-based partnerships with colleagues across the institution.
  • Work with faculty and institutional leaders to engage them as fundraising partners in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting prospective donors. Staff, train, and successfully guide internal stakeholders through the development process.
  • Partner with team members on the planning and executions of development related activities for the department including professorship dedications, lectureships, and other stewardship events.
  • Participate and engage in team-wide activities, meetings, events, and knowledge-sharing.
  • Represent school/division on committees and at institution-wide programming where appropriate.
  • Analyze data at a high level, identify prospects, demonstrate activity, and track progress toward work plan goals.
  • Participate in special projects, programs, initiatives as assigned.
  • Other duties as assigned.
In addition to the duties described above, the Associate Director will:
  • Be responsible for the Department of Medicine's Annual Fund Strategy, including development of targeted appeals for grateful patients, memorial/tribute donors, and third-party fundraisers, and manage all associated communications in partnership with the Associate Director of Donor Relations.
  • Analyze donor and grateful patient data to identify new prospects at the $1000+ level, evaluate giving trends, and measure the effectiveness of annual giving efforts; produce accurate internal reports to guide strategy.
  • Serve as liaison to the Office of Medical Annual Giving (OMAG), managing the distribution of OMAG lists and draft correspondence.
  • Execute stewardship activity for annual donors, including acknowledgment programs and monthly new and/or unmanaged donor outreach at the $250+ level, relaying information to major gift officers as appropriate.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • Three years of related experience, with one year of professional experience.
  • Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
