Vehicle Equipment Mechanic I –
Community College of Baltimore County

Class DescriptionThe Vehicle/Equipment Mechanic I is responsible for the maintenance, repairs, and safe operation of college automotive vehicles and motorized equipment.
Minimum Requirements- High school diploma or equivalent with two years of auto mechanic experience.
- Minimum of two (2) ASE Automobile Certifications preferred.
- Flexibility and ability to change shift when requested.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record of less than five (5) points.
- Ability to participate in blood borne pathogens training within six (6) months of employment.
- Hepatitis B vaccination or a signed waiver.
- Success in a background investigation including driving, fingerprint, and criminal history.
- Pre‑hire physical examination, including drug screening.
The employee must be available for campus emergencies, and to perform duties at times when the campus is closed. 24‑hour standby or call‑in may be required. Overtime or special hours may be needed.
Position Specific Essential Duties- Analyze vehicle malfunctions and determine required repairs.
- Determine need for new parts, plan and perform rework of parts.
- Perform adjustments and repairs to minor components such as brakes, ignition, carburetor, generator, and electrical system.
- Remove, disassemble, and reassemble major components such as differentials and auxiliary drives.
- Perform general maintenance (lubrication, charging batteries, changing coolants, adding brake fluid).
- Maintain and repair chassis, frames, and bodies.
- Check and adjust wheel and chassis alignment.
- Inspect body and frame damage; straighten, align, and/or remove dents.
- Rework vehicles and equipment to improve performance, safety and durability.
- Instruct and guide less skilled workers.
- Perform tank readings, maintain logs, and assist in coordination of tank inspections/maintenance in compliance with Maryland Department of Environment regulations.
- Clean fleet motor vehicles for campus use.
- Participate in snow removal or duties assigned in response to college emergencies.
- Assist in the implementation of college and non‑college events/activities.
- Effectively perform in a service environment and follow all county, state, college, and departmental policies and procedures.
