MissionThe Johns Hopkins Police Department seeks highly motivated individuals to serve as police officers. Applicants must be certified law enforcement officers with at least two (2) years of experience in a full‑service agency and must hold MPCTC certification or meet comparative compliance standards.
ResponsibilitiesPolice Officers work in a team environment with integrity, professionalism, humanity, and courage to protect the lives and property of the Johns Hopkins community. Officers will serve on the Homewood, East Baltimore, and Peabody campuses, ensuring JHPD provides responsive, quality, customer‑service‑oriented policing. This position involves shift work and rotating days off.
- Represent the JHPD vision, mission, and values in interactions with the university, community, advocacy groups, and coordinate JHPD resources to address concerns.
- Enforce laws, regulations, and university policies; perform law enforcement functions and problem‑solving to enhance safety.
- Implement community policing strategies and patrol designated areas by vehicle, bicycle, and foot.
- Maintain a visible presence to serve as a positive resource and develop relationships with community stakeholders.
- Respond to calls for assistance and emergency service, de‑escalate situations, and engage additional response as needed.
- Coordinate with Campus Safety and Security Command Staff on preliminary and follow‑up investigations.
- Conduct investigations of incidents reported on the shift.
- Assist with carrying out preliminary investigative activities at crime scenes until arrival of investigative entities.
- Direct traffic and assist with crowd control.
- Provide safety information and conduct community‑related public safety programs.
- Participate in specialized unit activities such as crime prevention, recertification instruction, investigations, or special events.
- Inspect and maintain assigned equipment and clothing; operate law enforcement equipment.
- Collect and preserve evidence; serve warrants and summonses.
- Prepare and assist with cases for court, including testifying when required.
- Collaborate with local and state law enforcement agencies.
- Perform administrative duties such as answering telephones, dispatching, issuing parking permits, providing information, and maintaining visitor logs.
- Perform related duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Must be at least 20½ years of age.
- Two years of service with a full‑service law enforcement agency.
- Current MPCTC certification or MPCTC certification within the last two (2) years, or meet comparative compliance standards.
- Minimum of 750 hours of acceptable entrance‑level police academy training (excluding firearms, field training, or in‑service training) to meet COMAR and MPCTC requirements.
- Must be in good standing with a full‑service law enforcement agency or have retired in good standing within 2 years of application.
- Provide academy curriculum, total number of hours, and graduation certificate.
Satisfactory completion of a Maryland Police Training Commission‑recognized or approved police academy training program and successful completion of a Police Field Training program. Employees may be subject to pre‑employment and random drug testing and will serve a one‑year probationary period after successful completion of the MPTSC training academy, field training, and other requirements for certification or recertification as Maryland law enforcement.
