Systems Engineer
We are seeking a Sr. Systems Engineer for Johns Hopkins Public Safety. The role provides technical leadership, project management, and task execution for administration, programming, maintenance, and performance implementation of departmental platforms. It includes the installation of new software, operating systems, utilities/services, and hardware products, as well as the integration of new products and software into the organization.
Job Scope/ComplexityProvide technical leadership based on extensive knowledge, skills, and experience; influence clients toward innovative solutions. Responsible for full life‑cycle of large‑complex projects that span department, division, or enterprise level. Projects often involve 501‑3000 concurrent users requiring uptime for critical clinical, business, education, or enterprise systems. Complex and large projects typically have no obvious workarounds and impact multiple systems.

- Design highly complex business, clinical, education, or infrastructure solutions by meeting with customers to understand current processes and issues.
- Provide written documentation and diagrams of findings for the client and IT colleagues.
- Assist lower levels to effectively use the system’s technical software.
- Design solutions that conform to institutional policies, standards, guidelines, and best practices.
- Select infrastructure applications that reside between end‑use applications and hardware OS, working with vendors and open‑source initiatives.
- Develop new methods to improve service processes, performance, and functionality using system management tools.
- Research, recommend, and implement new technologies based on institutional value.
- Work with vendor processes and products to improve quality and fit for the institution.
- Assign and lead technical systems analysis and design tasks for assigned environments and platforms.
- Install and configure highly complex server hardware and OS following technical documentation.
- Evaluate, implement, and manage appropriate software and hardware solutions using best practices.
- Install and configure infrastructure applications following product directions and industry best practices.
- Ensure an effective schedule for system backups and archive operations with leadership and oversight.
- Lead and provide direction to the technical team for all tasks, ensuring adherence to institutional standards and timely delivery.
- Provide highly complex server‑level administration: manage HW/SW, maintenance, upgrades, patches, account maintenance, backups, recoveries, and user assistance.
- Monitor and tune the system for optimum performance.
- Develop highly complex scripts and solutions using departmental standards for automation.
- Perform system software upgrades with planning, scheduling, testing, and coordination.
- Audit and maintain user access and authorization for system security.
- Generate and maintain periodic system reports to assess performance, integrity, and capacity.
- Follow IT security best practices to deliver secure solutions.
- Utilize system management, monitoring tools, and incident tracking systems.
- Resolve incidents by reviewing new solutions and ensuring smooth transition to customers.
- Lead technical teams and ensure adherence to institutional standards for quality maintenance.
- Implement changes following change‑management policies and procedures.
- Lead effort to develop RFPs and engage project team members in the process.
- Evaluate vendor proposals and select the most appropriate vendor.
- Lead vendors, consultants, and enterprise groups in developing applications.
- Lead scheduled project team meetings and provide input.
- Author and maintain documentation for technical and end‑user reference.
