The Associate Chief Medical Officer (ACMO) and Vice President of Medical Affairs (VPMA) at the hospital plays a pivotal leadership role in advancing clinical excellence, patient safety, and operational effectiveness across the hospital. With a primary reporting relationship to the EVP/Chief Physician Executive of GBMC Health Care and a secondary reporting relationship to the Hospital EVP/Chief Operating Officer, this position maintains an active clinical practice while providing executive oversight for medical staff governance, institutional review board, and quality improvement initiatives.
Key responsibilities include championing hospital quality and safety, optimizing patient flow and resource utilization, ensuring clinical documentation integrity, and fostering collaborative relationships among medical staff, hospital leadership, and stakeholders. The role demands strategic communication, regulatory compliance, and a commitment to GBMC's core values of respect, excellence, accountability, teamwork, ethical behavior, and results, all aimed at delivering superior patient care and supporting organizational goals.
- M.D. or D.O., with completion of an ACGME-approved residency (required)
- Master's Degree MBA, MHA or equivalent training (Preferred)
- At least five years of experience with significant combination of clinical, educational, and administrative experience in a hospital environment with proven leadership & management skills.
- Previous CMO, ACMO, or medical director experience (Preferred)
- Knowledge of industry standards JCAHO, Medicare, OSHA, Organizational management, regulatory standards for affected area of responsibility.
- Demonstrated success leading change, integration, and culture initiatives that align diverse stakeholders around shared goals.
- Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to maintain good rapport and effective working relationships with medical staff, nursing staff and other hospital personnel.
- Demonstrates and facilitates collaboration and teamwork to achieve goals

- Demonstrates innovative and creative approaches to work
- Maryland Medical License (required upon hire)
- Current Board Certification & active state medical license (required)
Clinical Care:
- Maintain a minimum of 0.25 FTE in an active clinical practice within GBMC Health Care
- Ensure maintaining outstanding clinical care, quality, and service to patients and referring providers, and set the example for the providers at GBMC Health Care.
Medical Staff Office & Institutional Review Board (IRB):
- Provides executive oversight of the Medical Staff Office and Institutional Review Board (IRB), including annual budgeting, resource allocation, and performance monitoring.
- Ensures that the MSO & IRB operations are appropriately staffed, financially responsible, and aligned with organizational strategic and compliance priorities.
Physician Champion for Hospital Quality & Safety:
- Direct responsibility for clinical aspects of quality and safety of patient care (Board Quality, grievance, critical incident command, & P&T, etc). Lead relevant local quality and safety committees.
- Partner with Quality & Safety (Q&S) team leadership as the physician subject matter expert (SME) and physician champion to achieve system goals. In particular, champion excellence for the federal and state quality initiatives (MHAC, Q , RRIP, VBP, etc.)
- Support the Quality department to ensure regulatory readiness for Joint Commission & other regulatory surveys.
- Foster a culture of safety, high reliability, and Zero Harm.
Hospital Throughput:
- Serves as the executive physician leader accountable for hospital throughput, patient flow, & inpatient capacity management.
- Champions a culture of proactive patient progression, engaging physician and nursing leaders to remove barriers to timely care.
- Leads hospital-wide initiatives to improve coordination across continuum, reducing avoidable delays, & optimizing use of hospital resources.
Clinical Documentation Integrity & Case Mix Optimization:
- Partner with the Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) and coding teams to engage physicians in accurate, complete documentation that reflects true patient acuity, and supports an optimized case mix index.
- Champions physician education and accountability for documentation practices that advance quality reporting, appropriate reimbursement, and regulatory compliance.
Utilization Review and Resource Stewardship:
- Collaborate with Utilization Review, physician advisors, and case management to ensure medical necessity, appropriate level-of-care decisions, and efficient use of hospital resource.
- Champions physician accountability for documentation and clinical judgement that support appropriate utilization and accurate representation of patient status.
