SummaryThe Medical Instrument Technician performs echocardiography studies (heart ultrasound) and records the procedure for interpretation by a cardiologist. This diagnostic ultrasound procedure assesses heart function and identifies abnormalities to assist cardiologists in determining optimal treatment plans. The technician ensures all images are properly filed and final reports are downloaded to CPRS.
Qualifications- United States Citizenship.
- No specific educational requirements, but a Bachelor's degree is desirable.
- Licensure or Certification not required but strongly desirable at GS-6 or higher.
- Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) certification is desirable;
Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) desirable. - At least 1 year of experience comparable to the next lower grade level (GS‑05/GS‑06 depending on grade).
- Knowledge of cardiac anatomy, physiology, arrhythmias, ultrasound physics, and disease findings.
- Ability to set up and operate ultrasound equipment, scan transthoracic and transesophageal echocardiograms, perform Doppler studies, and produce diagnostic quality images.
- Proficient in spoken and written English.
- Work is primarily active; lifting up to 25 pounds, moving equipment, assisting patients.
- Standing, sitting, walking for prolonged periods.
- Visual acuity: near 13–16 inches and far 20/20-20/40. Depth perception and color discrimination required.
- Mental and emotional stability required.
- Perform echocardiography studies and record procedures for cardiologist interpretation.
- Ensure images are properly filed and reports downloaded to CPRS.
- Assist with transesophageal echocardiograms (TEE), process TEE scopes.
- Perform Doppler and M‑mode studies; produce diagnostic quality images.
- Maintain comprehensive knowledge of cross‑sectional cardiac anatomy.
Monday – Friday, 08:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Paid time off: 37–50 days per year (includes annual leave, sick leave, federal holidays).
Parental leave: up to 12 weeks paid after 12 months of employment.
