Medical Assistant - PRN Urgent Care

General Summary Of Position

The Medical Assistant performs clinical and administrative duties in an ambulatory care setting under the supervision of a physician/provider and/or a registered nurse. Duties include venipuncture, medication and vaccine administration, measurement and documentation of vital signs, assisting providers with patient exams, and telephone and clerical support. The position may float to other sites within the system.

• Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to departmental policies and safety standards.
• Assists providers with patient preparation, minor office procedures, examination, and patient education, managing variable patient volume throughout the day.
• Provides clerical support and serves as backup for the Patient Services Coordinator or other team members as needed.
• Participates in daily team huddles, screens patients for preventative care needs, and conducts surveillance for care transitions, urgent/emergent care, or follow-up tasks.
• Conducts motivational interviews, screening, and coaching on disease management and behavioral health needs.
• Reports actual and potential problems concerning patients and participates in quality and safety improvement initiatives.
• Maintains compliance with regulatory, accreditation, and quality/safety standards, including temperature logs and emergency equipment area.
• Participates in population management activities and engages patients in self‑management support and health goal setting.
• Performs selected patient and laboratory testing consistent with the scope of practice, including point‑of‑care testing, sutures removal, and documenting all activities in the EMR.
• Provides escort and chaperone services as per policy, performs discharge activities, and supports infection prevention and environmental responsibilities.
• Conducts telephone screening, inserts and monitors IV catheters, urinary catheters, and administers medications under supervision, and may perform phlebotomy.
• Utilizes the EMR to propose medication refills, complete requisitions, and contact insurance for pre‑authorizations.
• Floats to other sites within the system as needed and attends scheduled meetings and training classes for safety, infection control, OSHA, CLIA, BLS, and others.
• Demonstrates behavior consistent with Med Star Health mission, vision, and values.

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.

• Less than 1 year, 6 months of experience in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent required (externship in a medical or ambulatory setting strongly preferred).
• For cardiology offices only: 6 months experience in an ambulatory care medical office or equivalent required or a bachelor’s degree in exercise physiology/science or related major preferred.
• Prior experience as a medical assistant preferred.

• Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) – AAMA required within 1 year.
• Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) – American Medical Technologists required within 1 year.
• CPR (BLS, NRP) required within 90 days.
• Additional specialty certifications may vary by department.

• Clinical competency verified within 90‑day orientation and annually thereafter.
• Excellent customer service and patient interaction skills.
• Basic computer skills preferred.

USD $19.17 – USD $31.36 per hour.
