About the Job

Physician Assistant – Nocturnist, Critical Care APP at Med Star Good Samaritan Hospital (Northern Baltimore, MD). The ICU is a 17‑bed mixed medical and surgical unit where Critical Care APPs work autonomously yet collaboratively with intensive care physicians and a multidisciplinary team. The APP will provide emergent and urgent care, lead the Code Blue team, participate in Rapid Response, and perform critical‑care consultations for unstable patients requiring ICU transfer across the hospital.

Responsibilities
  • Provide emergent and urgent care to patients in critical condition.
  • Perform histories and physical examinations.
  • Establish appropriate medical diagnoses based on history, chart review, physical exam, lab testing, and imaging.
  • Recommend, initiate, and manage therapeutic interventions for respiratory failure, heart failure, shock, and acid‑base disturbances.
  • Present patients on daily rounds with the ICU attending and multidisciplinary team.
  • Collaborate with all involved care teams, including other consultants.
  • Perform bedside procedures: insertion of central venous, non‑tunneled dialysis, and arterial catheters, chest tubes, and thoracentesis.
  • Communicate between healthcare professionals to promote safe patient transition between shifts, services, and/or levels of care.
  • Educate and supervise new graduate APPs and students as appropriate.
Schedule

Full‑time (147 shifts per year), full‑time night shift, approximately two weekends per month.

Requirements
  • Graduation from an accredited physician assistant or acute care nurse practitioner program.
  • NCCPA (physician assistant) or AGACNP (nurse practitioner) certification.
  • BLS and ACLS certifications.
  • One year of critical‑care or inpatient hospital medicine experience preferred, with experience in advanced procedures. New graduates considered.
