The Department of Surgery is seeking a Vascular Sonographer
. The Vascular Sonographer will perform various noninvasive laboratory diagnostic tests of venous and arterial disease. This individual will be responsible for obtaining a brief relevant medical history of the patient’s vascular problem by interview and review of current and/or old medical records. Pertinent diagnostic findings will be documented by writing in the patient’s vascular laboratory chart and discussed with the referring physician as required.
Will work under the direct supervision of the Technical Director of the Vascular Laboratory, who is responsible to the Medical Director of the laboratory.
- The Vascular Sonographer is responsible for performing the following tests, collecting the digital or hard copy imaging and assembling the data in the patient’s vascular laboratory record.
- Carotid arterial disease will be assessed by the technique duplex ultrasound imaging.
- Possible deep and superficial venous insufficiency will be evaluated with duplex ultrasound. Deep venous obstruction will be assessed using duplex ultrasound imaging.
- Upper and lower extremity arterial disease will be assessed by Doppler and blood pressure cuff occlusion technique, and/or duplex ultrasound scanning.
- Lower extremity arterial disease will be assessed with the patient at rest and when indicated after treadmill exercise. Small arterial disease may be assessed with photo plethysmography (PPG).
- Renal and mesenteric arterial disease will be assessed by duplex ultrasound imaging.
- Abdominal arterial aneurismal disease will be assessed by duplex ultrasound imaging.
- The Vascular Sonographer is responsible for billing vouchers for tests performed, recording and filing this information with the appropriate billing offices.
- Will be responsible for maintaining the laboratory in good working condition and for maintaining adequate levels of laboratory supplies. Testing is performed among outpatients and inpatients of the Johns Hopkins Hospital.
- Responsible for formulating a preliminary interpretation of the test data and, where appropriate, documenting that interpretation in the patient’s medical records.
- Expected to have sufficient knowledge of the indications, performance, and reliability of these tests so as to be able to advise physicians as to the appropriateness of requested testing for the patient’s clinical problem under evaluation.
- Assist with the correlation of all Vascular Lab examinations with the Gold Standard and with the accreditation process (IAC) of the lab.
- Expected to help in the education of patients, employees, Vascular Fellows, Medical and Surgical House Staff, and students in the basics of ultrasound and anatomy and physiology.
- The Vascular Sonographer is to be an active participant in the Ultrasound Students and Vascular Fellows training, education and scanning opportunities in the Vascular Lab during their rotation.
- Expected to be an integral part of the organization, planning and distribution of the Vascular Lab operational schedule working with the Lead Sonographer and Technical Director.
- Expected to work with the Technical Director and non-invasive vascular lab staff in the continual development and implementation of changing policies and procedures dictated by the IAC Vascular board.
- Expected to perform the “day-to-day” operations of the vascular lab when the Technical Director is not present. Although the primary purpose of the vascular laboratory is to provide a clinical diagnostic service to the Johns Hopkins patient population, the aforementioned equipment may at times be utilized in clinical research projects. Therefore, the Vascular Sonographer may at times perform tests for this purpose and participate in clinical research.
- Requires certification as a Registered Vascular Technologist (RVT) from the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers, or must be RVT eligible within the first year of employment. If not currently an RVT, graduation from an accredited sonography school is required.
