The Maryland Department of Juvenile Services (DJS) is dedicated to transforming young lives, creating safer communities, and fostering equitable systems. We are seeking passionate individuals for the role of DJS Youth Transportation Officer Trainee.
This position is the entry level of work transporting and escorting youth who have been detained or placed in a facility operated by the Department of Juvenile Services. This position supervises, guides, directs, and organizes youth, while maintaining safety and security, care, custody, and program continuity in accordance with established DJS policies and facility procedures.
Employees in this classification will perform duties under close supervision and will provide direct care coverage over a continuum of shifts. The role includes detention room supervision, crisis intervention counseling, court security/escorting of juveniles, and transport of juveniles in the care of the Department of Juvenile Services. This includes transport from institutions, courts, group homes, shelter care facilities, airports, hospitals, mental institutions, and other facilities within the State of Maryland and surrounding states.
Important:
This position requires rotating shifts and mandatory overtime. Employees must also be available to work during emergency situations.
A work shift from 11:00 am to 7:00 pm is required for some facility work locations.
Minimum QualificationsEducation:
Graduation from an accredited high school or possession of a high school equivalency certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Correctional Training Commission regulation.

The above educational requirement is set by the Maryland Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209, Annotated Code of Maryland.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience transporting youth in a secure residential juvenile facility.
- Experience transporting youth or adults to and from courts, facilities, or other designated locations using State vehicles, such as ten-passenger vans.
- Experience working in a juvenile facility or correctional setting.
1. Employees in this classification must complete and successfully pass the Entrance Level Correctional Training Course for DJS support staff required for the Maryland Correctional Training Commission certificate during the probationary period.
2. Employees in this classification will be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle. Employees will be required to possess a motor vehicle operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.
Special Requirements1. In accordance with the Correctional Services Article, Section 8-209 of the Annotated Code of Maryland, the Maryland Correctional Training Commission shall establish the minimum qualifications for probationary or permanent appointment of a Department of Juvenile Services employee in a mandated position. These requirements are listed in detail in the Code of Maryland Regulations , general regulations of the Maryland Correctional Training Commission, and include:
- U.S. Citizenship or Resident Alien status
- Must be at least 21 years of age
- A thorough background check, including fingerprinting and drug testing
- An oral interview
- Physical and psychological examinations
