Position

POLICE OFFICER – JOHNS HOPKINS POLICE DEPARTMENT (Entry‑Level)

Mission

Overview

Police Officers work in a team environment with integrity, professionalism, humanity and courage to protect the lives and property of the Johns Hopkins community. Officers serve on Homewood, East Baltimore and Peabody campuses, ensuring responsive, quality, customer‑service‑oriented policing. Work will be supervised daily by a Sergeant and includes shift work with rotating days off.

Responsibilities
  • Represent JHPD’s vision, mission and values when interacting with university, community, and advocacy groups.
  • Provide full law‑enforcement work, enforcing laws, rules and regulations that govern safety and protection of individuals, buildings and property.
  • Enforce university policies and regulations, state laws, and partner with other university staff.
  • Ensure priorities and community‑policing strategies for patrol areas are implemented through vehicle, bicycle, and foot patrols.
  • Maintain a visible presence to serve as a positive resource and develop relationships with community stakeholders.
  • Respond to calls for assistance and emergencies, de‑escalate situations, and engage additional response when necessary.
  • Coordinate preliminary investigations of complaints and reported offenses, and assist in follow‑up investigations.
  • Direct traffic and assist with crowd control during special events.
  • Provide the public with safety information and conduct community safety programs.
  • Participate in specialized unit activities such as crime prevention, recertification instruction, criminal investigations, or special events.
  • Inspect and maintain assigned equipment, including self‑defense tools.
  • Collect, preserve evidence, and assist in serving warrants and summonses.
  • Prepare cases for court and testify when required.
  • Collaborate with local and state law‑enforcement agencies as needed.
  • Perform office duties such as answering telephones, dispatching, issuing parking permits, and providing general information.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must be at least 20 ½ years of age.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or a permanent legal resident with a pending U.S. citizenship application, or an honorably discharged veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces.
  • Must not have been convicted of a felony.
  • Must demonstrate physical ability to perform job duties.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to work weekends, holidays, rotating shifts, on-call, and as needed.
  • Must be able to pass written exam, oral interview, medical evaluation, drug test, polygraph, and psychological evaluation.
  • Must be able to pass a background investigation.
Requirements (Additional)
  • Certification as a sworn Police Officer recognized by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commissions (MPCTC).
  • Valid Maryland Non‑Commercial Class C or equivalent driver’s license.
  • Clery Act designated job as campus security authorities (CSA) member and compliance with Clery Act requirements.
  • Completion of MPCTC training academy and maintenance of certification; subject to a one‑year probationary period.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Effective communication (oral, written, electronic).
  • Knowledge of modern law‑enforcement practices and related federal, state, and municipal laws.
  • Ability to interpret and apply laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships in a multicultural environment.
  • Ability to operate a police vehicle, radio, and related equipment or weapons.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and quickly analyze complex situations.
  • Sound judgment in evaluating situations and making decisions.
  • Function with a community‑oriented, value‑based philosophy.
  • Skill in working in a multi‑cultural environment.
