Lead Transportation Engineer role at WSP in the U.S.
WSP is currently searching for a Lead Transportation Engineer with experience in highway design to join our dynamic Civil Engineering group in the Mid-Atlantic District.

Ideal candidates should have experience in highway design, roadway geometric design, roadway plan production, and drainage design for traditional or alternative delivery projects.
Responsibilities- Develop construction plans, specifications, reports and cost estimates; prepare construction safety and phasing plans and update infrastructure layout plans coordinating with owners, other disciplines, sub-consultants, and clients.
- Lead client-facing engagement sessions centered on technical memoranda.
- Support/lead large-scale heavy civil engineering projects ensuring collaborators are aligned on roles and responsibilities.
- Assist with engineering review of permit applications, design plans and specifications, standby plans, engineering contracts, integrated waste management plans, and periodic construction inspections to ensure compliance with applicable regulations and standards.
- Ensure technical reports and presentations explain research, findings and recommendations.
- Collect, compile, and analyze data from site surveys, blueprints, GIS data, subsurface utility information, maps, hydrologic analysis, geotechnical data and other matrices for project development.
- Apply high-level civil engineering techniques and processes to identify improvements for various infrastructure and transportation engineering work.
- Perform professional civil engineering work and conduct investigations and inspections of proposed and existing site conditions and resources.
- Involve from project inception to completion in management of design and construction of infrastructure projects, including rehabilitation and reconstruction, grading, drainage, pavement design, specifications, materials, phasing and construction safety plans.
- Oversee development and implementation of advanced technologies, monitoring devices, modeling techniques and design requirements for transportation systems.
- Coordinate work within the team, lead projects and be on site as required for meetings with clients and mentoring staff.
- Remain current in latest civil engineering techniques and practices.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds and resources, and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct.
- Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering or closely related discipline; postgraduate education a plus.
- 7 to 10 years of relevant post-education experience in engineering and civil design.
- P.E. license required (multi‑state preferred).
- Proficiency with civil engineering principles, process, and permitting.
- Extensive knowledge of infrastructure and highway design.
- Highly proficient with technical writing, office automation, discipline-specific design software such as Micro Station, AutoCAD, Civil 3D, ArcGIS, InRoads, Geopak, Geo Slope, ANSYS, STADD, HEC‑RAS, HEC‑HMS.
- Experience with infrastructure planning, design, and construction management, including rehabilitation and new design.
- Well‑defined knowledge of civil construction laws, codes, regulations, and record‑keeping.
- Ability to make technical computations and comparisons to regulations.
- Ability to plan and conduct inspections and investigations on construction and design facilities.
- Highly effective interpersonal and communication skills.
- Demonstrated self‑leadership, attention to detail, and multi‑tasking in dynamic environments.
- Works independently with minimal oversight and provides guidance to junior team members.
- Well‑developed critical thinking and problem‑solving skills.
- Effectiveness in coordinating and directing subcontractors safely and efficiently.
- Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and abiding by WSP’s health, safety, and harassment policies.
