Main Purpose

The main purpose of this position will be to lead the cross-alignment of music and visual arts standards with mathematics, science, social studies, English language arts, physical education, foreign language, and career and technical education (CTE) to ensure interdisciplinary integration. This work will support instructional coherence, strengthen student engagement, and reinforce academic and workforce competencies through arts-integrated learning across all content areas.

This position will involve creating curriculum resources and exemplar lessons that embed arts into academic instruction. Collaborating with educators and partners to expand student performance, exhibition, and creative learning opportunities. Providing instructional guidance and professional learning to support arts-integrated teaching across content areas. This position will be a key asset to advancing arts integration across JSEP by strengthening interdisciplinary instruction, supporting teacher practice, and expanding opportunities for student engagement, emotional and creative expression, skill development, and workforce-connected learning.

Position

duties
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive art and music framework aligned with Maryland Fine Arts Standards. Design and implement crosswalks integrating visual arts and music with ELA, mathematics, science, social studies, and CTE pathways.
  • Support arts-integrated, project-based learning models and develop interdisciplinary units that reinforce academic standards while promoting creativity, critical thinking, and student engagement.
  • Provide coaching and professional learning to support the integration of arts-based strategies into core instruction, strengthening literacy, executive functioning, emotional regulation, and student engagement.
  • Facilitate collaborative planning between arts and academic teachers, develop instructional toolkits and interdisciplinary assessment models, and support the use of arts as formative assessment and authentic demonstrations of learning.
  • Expand opportunities for student performance, exhibition, and arts-integrated project-based learning within credit-bearing coursework. Develop partnerships with arts, higher education, and workforce organizations, explore credential pathways in creative fields, and monitor program impact through engagement and school climate data.
  • Note:

    This position is not eligible for telework or hybrid work schedule.
Minimum qualifications

Education:

Possession of a Master’s Degree or equivalent 36 credit hours of post-baccalaureate coursework in Education or Education Administration/Supervision or a Maryland Advanced Professional Teaching Certificate in Secondary Education or Education Administration/Supervision or eligibility for a Maryland Advanced Professional Teaching Certificate.

Experience:

Three years of administrative, supervisory or teaching experience directly related to the assigned core program area in an education program providing services to an institutionalized or disadvantaged population.

Selective qualifications

Candidates for this position must possess Maryland Teacher Certification in Art and Music.

Desired or preferred qualifications

The preferred candidate for this position may possess any of the following qualifications:
Experience with educational administration, curriculum, and staff development; experience with the principles and practices in teaching juvenile and/or institutionalized learners; experience with the educational needs of disadvantaged and special populations.

Licenses, registrations and certifications

Teachers in State operated school programs are required to acquire and maintain certification to teach in the State of Maryland per Section 6-101 of the Education Article of the Annotated Code and COMAR 13A.12.01.03B(2). Applicants recommended for appointment will be required to complete an Authorization and Verification of Credentials. Information on requirements for certification and procedures for application may be obtained from the Maryland State Board of Education, 200 W.

Additional educational credits beyond the Advanced Professional Certificate must meet criteria established by the Institutional Educators Pay Plan Committee to qualify for APC plus 30 (60) levels: credits must be beyond the education level held at the time and relate to current job responsibilities or be part of an employer approved program of study. Credits mean semester hours from regionally accredited colleges or universities or Maryland State Department of Education approved workshops.

No more than half of any additional credits may be earned through Maryland Department of Education approved workshops.
