The Mathematics Coach will support the improvement of mathematics instruction and accelerate student achievement by partnering with teachers, school leaders, and district leadership. Math coach responsibilities include facilitating ongoing coaching cycles that include goal setting, co-planning, development of teacher pedagogy and content knowledge, informal classroom observation, modeling of instructional practices, and reflective feedback conversations.
The Math coaches are expected to regularly design and deliver school based professional learning aligned to curriculum, state standards, and district priorities. By analyzing data, supporting collaborative planning, and promoting effective, equitable instructional strategies, the Math coach builds teacher capacity and fosters a culture of continuous improvement in mathematics teaching and learning.
Math Coaches participate in ongoing professional development and collaboration with Mathematics Coaches across the district. This is a 10-month position plus up to 10 additional summer days dedicated to professional development.
The role is a fully released coaching position designed to ensure district goals, priorities, and strategies in mathematics are implemented with integrity in service of student growth and achievement aligned to the essential functions described below.
Essential Functions
* Lead ongoing coaching cycles with teachers who support math instruction, including goal setting, co-planning, development of teacher content knowledge, modeling lessons, classroom observation, and reflective feedback
* Facilitate school-based professional learning aligned to district adopted curriculum, Maryland State Mathematics Standards, and researched based instructional strategies
* Support all teachers and school based staff in implementing high-quality, standards-aligned, mathematics instruction
* Analyze student work and assessment data with teachers and school leadership teams to inform instructional decisions and monitor progress
* Lead collaborative planning meetings focused on improving mathematics instruction and student outcomes
* Model highly effective teaching practices, including questioning techniques, discourse facilitation, writing in mathematics, and differentiated instruction
* Collaborate with school leaders to align coaching efforts with school improvement goals
* Foster a culture of continuous improvement through reflective practice and professional collaboration
* Serves as a member of the school Instructional Leadership Team
* Serves as a point of contact for stakeholders and community members for mathematics
* Attends, facilitates, and/or develops all district professional development and annual summer mathematics institutes
* Performs and promotes all activities in compliance with equal employment and nondiscrimination policies, federal and state laws, school board policies, and professional standards
Desired Qualifications
Required Qualifications
? Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field from an accredited college or university
? Valid Maryland State Department of Education (MSDE) professional license
? Five (5) years of teaching experience in mathematics in K-12 and/or higher education
? Demonstrated knowledge of mathematics content knowledge and pedagogy across multiple grade levels
? Experience teaching multiple grade levels or grade bands (Elementary/Middle or Middle/High) preferred
? Urban teaching experience preferred
? Demonstrated experience facilitating or designing professional learning for adult learners aligned to Maryland state standards

- Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
? Deep knowledge of mathematics content, learning progressions, and standards-aligned instruction for the grades the math coach will support (K-5, K-8,6-8, or 9-12)
? Understanding of effective instructional practices, including differentiation, mathematical discourse, and formative assessment
? Ability to design and deliver engaging, job-embedded professional learning for adult learners
? Skill in analyzing student data and work samples to inform instructional decisions and measure impact
? Ability to develop teacher's mindsets and skills in data literacy, instructional decision making, equitable teacher practices, and pedagogy to positively influence student outcomes
? Strong interpersonal and communication skills to build trust, resolve conflict, collaborate effectively, and provide timely and constructive feedback
? Knowledge of curriculum implementation and strategies for supporting teachers using instructional materials with fidelity and flexibility
? Ability to prioritize, manage time, and work across multiple classrooms, grade levels, and initiatives
? Commitment to equity and the ability to support culturally responsive and inclusive mathematics instruction
? Proficiency in Google Workspace and Microsoft Office applications
