The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM) is seeking to fill a leadership role at the Assistant Dean level for Academic Administration and Human Resources. This position reports to the Senior Associate Dean for Finance and Business Affairs and collaborates closely with the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs, and the Senior Associate Dean for Academic Advancement.

Job Profile

The role of Assistant Dean offers an exciting opportunity to be part of the SOM leadership team, overseeing the primary functions within the Office of Academic Administration and Human Resources. The selected candidate will provide strategic and operational oversight of complex faculty recruitment, and the appointment, promotion, and tenure review processes. Developing a thorough understanding of University and School of Medicine policies, bylaws and procedures is essential.

This position will be responsible for spearheading the development of faculty-related school policy revisions or processes related to new policies, especially as accreditation standards are updated. This leadership role serves as the SOM's primary point of coordination for concerns related to faculty professionalism, including issues related to disruptive or other faculty conduct that is inconsistent with the values and professional standards of the University and the SOM.

Working in collaboration with the Faculty Affairs & Professional Development team, University Counsel, and the Executive Director of SOM Human Resources, the incumbent provides recommendations for resolving issues and concerns related to faculty conduct. This position works in tandem with the UMSOM Human Resources Office to coordinate on issues that impact HR functions and processes within the SOM. Total employees across functions is 10 and direct reports currently are 5.

It is expected that the successful candidate will:

* Develop a detailed understanding of the multifaceted/interrelated missions supported by SOM faculty and staff;

* Exhibit neutrality and calm authority when managing situations involving conflict;

* Serve as a highly credible resource for both faculty and other administrative leaders in the SOM and the University community;

* Demonstrate fair judgement and recognize potential patterns related to faculty professionalism concerns;

* Possess a high emotional IQ in order to effectively serve as a leadership partner;

* Have the skills and ability to provide thoughtful and meaningful verbal and written communications.

General

Duties and Responsibilities:

* Oversees all faculty recruitment requests in the School of Medicine on behalf of the Dean, including the process of approval for all faculty positions as well as adherence to the process for faculty recruitment waivers and the appointment of postdoctoral fellows.

* Under the guidance of the Senior Associate Deans, and with the assistance of UMB Counsel, as well as the University of Maryland Medical Center and/or Faculty Practice Leadership (as needed), provides recommendations for resolving faculty professionalism concerns within SOM/UMB Policy.

* Works with University Counsel, the Office of Faculty Affairs & Professional Development, and the SOM Office of Human Resources regarding appropriate faculty related actions within in the SOM departments, programs, centers, and institutes. Coordinates as needed with the UMB Office of Compliance & Accountability and the UMB ADA Coordinator for faculty employment issues.

* Attend regular meetings to provide guidance with leadership of the Faculty Affairs and Professional Development office.

* Leads the administrative functions of the Appointment, Promotion and Tenure Committee in the School of Medicine, which includes the Post Tenure Review Process.

* Leads the process and develops updates for SOM policy changes, some of which are approved through the SOM leadership and faculty shared governance organizations.
