Job Summary
The Girls’ Empowerment Mission (GEM) is a Living Classrooms Foundation Program that serves high school girls from underserved communities by providing opportunities and growth experiences that enable them to become independent, self‑sufficient, and confident young women. Economically disadvantaged girls often have few positive role models and very limited access to opportunities or education beyond what their school offers. The GEM program is designed to address the needs of at‑risk girls within a positive environment that includes cultural, recreational, social, educational, and professional opportunities, mentoring, counseling, service to others, leadership training, financial literacy, and decision‑making skills.
The program currently serves 39 girls at Chesapeake High School in Essex, MD and runs from September to June, with a 3‑day overnight summer camp in July.
The leader will work with one other leader to supervise one group of 13 GEM girls and conduct GEM activities. The group (12–14 girls) meets twice a month during weekday evenings from 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM, and once a month for an overnight weekend retreat from Friday 2:00 PM until Saturday 5:00 PM. Staff meetings are held once a month from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
PrimaryResponsibilities
- Report to the GEM Program Director and attend monthly staff meetings.
- Help plan, equip, and implement two weekday evening programs and one weekend retreat program each month based on GEM curricula.
- Transport students in LCF or rented Enterprise vans for weekend retreat programs and assist in the development and successful implementation of new GEM programs.
- Record or oversee the recording of accurate GEM program data, including attendance and student feedback forms.
- Review and adjust curriculum as needed.
- Maintain professionalism at all times as an important representative of the Living Classrooms Foundation and the GEM program.
- Ensure supplies are available in advance for programs and maintain open communication with girls and their parents.
- Perform other duties necessary for the operation of the programs or the Foundation as assigned by the GEM Program Director or Director of Education.
- Valid driver’s license and permission to drive LCF vehicles; CJIS background check and fingerprinting required.
- Positive attitude, flexibility, and willingness to be a role model and form relationships with participants.
- Bachelor’s degree, preferably in education, social work, or a related field; experience working with teenage girls is a plus.
