The University of Maryland Baltimore's Office of Educational Support and Disability Services (ESDS) has an opportunity to hire several Contingent Category I Sign Language Interpreters. The selected candidates willaccomplish responsibilities by applying specialized and theoretical knowledge, principles, and concepts of a professional discipline normally acquired through advanced education or specialized training. Resolves issues and significant matters on behalf of management by utilizing independent judgment, discretion, creativity, and analytical thinking.

Contributes to development and evaluation of goals and objectives. Creates solutions to ensure legal and policy compliance. May supervise, mentor, or coordinate work of others (positions that supervise are responsible for service delivery, quality assurance, and employee performance). May independently manage or administer programs, processes, projects, or resources.

Applies intermediate level knowledge, concepts, principles, and skills. Decision making occurs within general guidelines and requires significant interpretation. Supervisor defines work guided by goals and objectives. Supervisor assists with unusual situations. Solutions require considerable analysis and evaluation of various alternatives. Independently anticipates needs and requirements to resolve non-routine matters.

* Contingent Category I (CI) employees are temporary employees. CI employees are eligible for subsidized health and prescription drug benefit coverage but are not eligible for paid leave.


Primary Duties
  • Interprets lectures, discussions, announcements, conversations, meetings, events, and other spoken word situations using manual sign system appropriate for the language and the cultural background of deaf/hard of hearing students and staff. Recognizes and adjusts interpretive language to match the student's preferred language and language mode to ensure that the student comprehends the interpretation.
  • Interprets deaf/hard of hearing students' signs into fluent English for other students, faculty, and college staff.
  • Works with faculty and college departments to gain understanding of relevant course concepts to better facilitate translation for deaf/hard of hearing students.
  • Provides information and orientation to deaf/hard of hearing students in emergency situations.
  • Works effectively in teams with other sign language interpreters.
  • Utilizes technologies to transcribe speech to text in classroom and other settings.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in a relevant field of study. Completion of an accredited interpreter training program.

Experience: Three years experience as a sign language interpreter including experience in a post-secondary educational setting.

Supervisory Experience: N/A

Certification/Licensure: Certification by Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID), or certification by the National Association for the Deaf (NAD) or an equivalent certification.

Other: Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.

Clery act designated job as campus security authorities (CSA) member and will comply with Clery Act requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
