The Peabody Preparatory is pleased to announce an opening for an Adjunct Early Childhood Music teaching position in the Early Childhood Music Department at the Peabody Preparatory, a division of the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, MD. Start date is June 2025.
The successful Early Childhood Music teaching candidate will provide group-based music instruction to students (birth to 5 years of age) and families. The Peabody Preparatory's Early Childhood program uses a leading-edge, research-based curriculum developed from the Music Learning Theory of Dr. Edwin Gordon and adapted by Dr. Eric Rasmussen, department chair. Successful candidates will receive training in the Early Childhood Music curriculum at Peabody Preparatory as part of onboarding.
Candidates should be experienced in working with young musicians and have basic skills on keyboard, guitar, or other chordal accompanying instruments.
Responsibilities- Teach up to 3 classes per campus over the summer (6 weeks), with classes offered on Saturdays and possibly another weekday morning, depending on location.
- During the academic year, teach up to 4 classes on Saturday mornings and possibly weekday morning classes for the fall and spring semesters (32 weeks).
- Based on availability, additional opportunities may be available at other campus locations.
Multiple locations, including Howard County, Downtown Baltimore, Frederick, possibly more.

Established in 1894, the Peabody Preparatory nurtures musical talent. With approximately 2,500 students weekly, it is Maryland's premier community school for music and dance. The Preparatory welcomes students of all ages and abilities, offering programs from early childhood classes to adult dance and music programs. Located in downtown Baltimore and sharing space with the Peabody Conservatory, the Preparatory also operates four satellite campuses in Towson, Annapolis, Frederick, and Howard County, MD.
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in music, music education, and/or early childhood education is required. Master’s degree or equivalent experience and training preferred.
- Documented successful teaching experience required.
- Experience and an excellent manner with children birth to 5 years.
- Excellent musicianship and comfort with melodies in all tonalities and meters.
- A background in early childhood music is preferred but not required.
