Position Summary

The History curriculum at Bryn Mawr includes 9th grade global medieval history; 10th grade modern world history and AP World History; 11th grade US History; and 12th grade electives and AP courses. The ability to foster a comprehensive foundation in the political, economic, cultural, and intellectual development of the world is essential, as is the ability to emphasize the historian’s tools – research, primary source reading, as well as verbal and written analysis.

Pedagogically, our department is committed to promoting student engagement, critical thinking, inclusivity, and skill development using student-centered techniques, including facilitating student-led discussion, role-based simulations, writing/research development, and collaborative projects. The ideal candidate welcomes the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues from all departments to create personalized, meaningful learning experiences while sharing their own passion for research and critical inquiry.

Key Responsibilities

Teach two or three sections of history (classes typically are between 15-18 students), including two sections of AP Economics and possibly one section of U.S. History

Provide a safe, predictable, and supportive environment for all students in all settings

Implement methods and practices to ensure that lessons engage students and allow them to build critical thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving skills

Recognize the relationship between social-emotional learning and academic performance, and aspire toward developing and teaching the whole child.

Provide assessments and feedback that help students build appropriate skills and content mastery

Authentically engage in annual self-reflection and goal-setting; demonstrate progress toward goals; is open and responsive to feedback from students, parents, colleagues, and administrators to demonstrate a growth mindset

Qualifications/Skills/Requirements

Bachelors or Masters degree in History, Education or related field

3-5 years teaching experience

Desire and ability to work with Upper School students with diverse backgrounds and levels of ability toward accomplishing their educational goals

Ability to organize tasks and manage time to meet many and varied deadlines; manage small and large groups of students in a classroom environment; and communicate effectively with students, parents, school administrators and other staff, including the ability to discuss topics which may be sensitive.

Willingness to support the life of the school community beyond classroom teaching/advising

Commitment to using conversation norms and constructive engagement at all times with students, caregivers, colleagues; speak positively about school and community members in all contexts.
