Overview

The Position:
The Helmut Schmidt Distinguished Visiting Chair at the Kissinger Center for Global Affairs, SAIS, Johns Hopkins University. Established in 2018 with funding from the German Federal Foreign Office, the chair commemorates the friendship between Henry

A. Kissinger and Helmut Schmidt and serves as a core element of the Germany Initiative that connects Germany and the United States to address global challenges. The distinguished scholar selected for the chair will partner with Kissinger Center faculty and other SAIS programs. The visitor may establish a research group with post-doctoral researchers and will collaborate with SAIS faculty to build a research program on transatlantic cooperation, develop a curriculum for training future leaders, and engage policy professionals in related work.

The chair will also support two DAAD post-doctoral fellows working on the roles of the United States and Germany, and will participate in initiatives such as an annual high-level German–US conference in Berlin and a regular summer workshop for early career academics and high-level policymakers in Washington, D.C.

Qualifications
  • Located in fields aligned with Kissinger s broad approach to international affairs, including strategic studies and diplomatic history; innovative, policy-relevant research is valued.
  • Strong grounding in historical approaches to global statecraft and the ability to communicate with a broad audience.
  • Applicants with research agendas on transnational issues such as climate change, migration and immigration, regional integration, globalization, and international/transatlantic security policy will receive special consideration.
  • Focus on Germany and proven expertise in Germany s international relations with Europe and the world, especially transatlantic relations, to forge links with policy making circles and highlight lessons for long-term strategic analysis.
  • Affiliation with a German university or research institution to bridge Germany and the U.S.; prior experience in U.S. academic and policy environments is a plus.
  • The contract is flexible, initially one year with possible renewal; teaching within the Kissinger Center curriculum and seminars is expected.
  • Preference for a full-professor level candidate, with consideration for associate professors.

Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end of the salary range.
