Overview

Mission:
Our mission is to develop fellows who are both knowledgeable in the essential areas of medical education and who are ready to improve medical education within Emergency Medicine.

The program focuses on design and administration of educational programs (graduate and undergraduate medical education programs), curriculum development, effective feedback, mentorship, learner assessment, and development as a skilled educator across various settings.

Duration: 1-2 years (2 year fellows complete MEHP degree).

Advanced degrees/other education:
Fellows can apply for the Masters in Education for the Health Professions at Johns Hopkins School of Education. They can also apply to the ACEP Teaching Fellowship or take courses through the Johns Hopkins Faculty Development Office.

General Goals / Areas of Focus

The Education Fellowship is designed to address the following core objectives:

  • Fellows will work under the direction of a program leader to learn the essential components of both residency and undergraduate medical administration, including regulatory guidelines, certification maintenance, and programmatic structural requirements.
  • Fellows will develop skill in curricular development, needs assessment, research, design, and implementation of curricular advances in educational programs within the department (UME, GME, APP, Faculty).
  • Fellows will develop an understanding of both programmatic (curricula) and individual learner assessment and participate in feedback sessions with learners in the role of an "Acting Assistant Program Director".
  • Fellows will develop leadership skills to function as an educational leader in the departmental program.
  • Fellows will develop a diverse set of educator skills through the development of educational materials delivered across varied settings (large group didactic, small group case discussion, simulation).
  • Other Possible Areas for Focused Goals:

    • Simulation

    Fellows will work under the direction of Drs. Julie Rice or Jules Jung to learn the components required to integrate simulation into medical education curricula, understand the usefulness of simulation, practice using simulation as a form of evaluation, assist in running simulation cases, and research/implement a curriculum.

    • Evidence Based Medical Education

    Fellows will work under the director to learn EBME and how to integrate EBME into clinical practice, understand EMBE vs EBM, principles of critical appraisal, and using the 5

    As of EBM to answer a clinical question.

    Fellows are required to participate in activities across each of the following areas:

  • Teaching and Program Administration: Residency lectures, medical student lectures, small group direction, bedside clinical teaching, simulation activities, weekly administrative meetings
  • Research and Scholarly Pursuit: Participation in new or ongoing work, development of implementable projects, grant applications, literature reviews with librarian support, supervised journal peer-review
  • Disseminating Scholarship: Mentored peer review, manuscript submission, EBM Consult submission, Writing Accountability Groups, local/regional/national didactics
  • Personal Development: ACEP Teaching Fellowship or MEHP, monthly fellowship sessions, journal club, Teaching College meetings, national conference attendance, Educator's Portfolio
  • Clinical: 900 hours at clinical sites with supervision and teaching roles as needed
  • Fellow Assessment
