Job Summary

As the leadership of the Mitchell School of Engineering looks towards the future, we are excited to announce a planned reorganization of the Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering into the Department of Industrial and Mechatronics Engineering (IME). The new unit will consist of 13 faculty, 152 undergraduates and 30 graduate students. To be completed during this 2025-26 academic year, this reorganization offers an excellent opportunity for a visionary leader as its inaugural department chair.
Aboutthe Role
Reporting to the Dean of the School of Engineering, the chair of IME is the department’s chief academic and administrative officer, responsible for leading and shaping the department’s strategic direction, promoting a culture of excellence in research and teaching, and building strong collaborations across disciplines, industries, and global networks. This 12-month appointment is at the rank of full professor with a start date of August 2026.
Job DutiesKey Responsibilities
- Aligned with Morgan’s goal of becoming an R-1 Carnegie institution, develop and implement a strategic vision for the growth of the department, advancing its educational, research, and service missions while aligning with emerging trends in the field.
- Drive curriculum and research innovations by promoting initiatives in areas such as advanced manufacturing, robotics, AI and machine learning, sustainable energy systems, and biomedical devices to name several.
- Cultivate and expand cross-disciplinary collaborations, strengthen industry and corporate partnerships, and develop local and global networks of support that reflect the needs of 21st‑century employers.
- Oversee undergraduate and graduate programs, ensuring academic excellence, accreditation compliance, and relevance to the future of the profession.
- Recruit, retain, mentor, and promote outstanding and diverse faculty and staff.
- Manage departmental resources, operations, and budgets effectively and responsibly.
- Collaborate with the Dean and University leadership on policy development and strategic priorities.
- Lead and support fundraising and external engagement efforts to enhance the department’s visibility and resource.
The candidate must exhibit strong leadership qualities, effective communication abilities and is expected to have an understanding of the subject matters covered by the department.
RequiredMinimum Qualifications Education
- Possess an earned terminal degree in Industrial, Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical, Biomedical, Aerospace, Systems Engineering or a closely related discipline.
