Summary
The Psychiatrist is in the outpatient Mental Health Clinic within the Mental Health Clinical Center (MHCC) and practices at the independent clinical level, treating the geriatric population. The Psychiatrist has specialized knowledge of assessment, diagnosis, and psychopharmacologic treatment of various mental health conditions and provides individual treatment using evidence-based interventions for Veterans with diagnosis.
QualificationsTo qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed VA physicians who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
BasicRequirements
- United States Citizenship:
Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy - Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree from an approved medical school
- The degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
- Current, full, and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia
- Residency Training:
Completion of residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification - Approved residencies: ACGME, AOA, or other residencies deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee
- Residents enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency programs may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs); PRPs must be fully licensed physicians and may be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis
- PRPs are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged; they must have a defined scope of practice under supervision
- Proficiency in spoken and written English
- Physical Requirements:

- Provide individual treatment using evidence-based interventions for Veterans with diagnoses such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, Substance Use Disorder, Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, severe and persistent mental illness, personality disorders, and other disabling affective and anxiety disorders
- Work as a member of an interdisciplinary MHCC team
- Occasionally visit a main facility or a different CBOC for meetings or trainings
