THE OPPORTUNITY

Since its founding in 1943, the Department of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine (ACCM) at Johns Hopkins has led the field in clinical care, academic innovation, and biomedical discovery. Building on this legacy, the department seeks a forward-thinking, collaborative leader to serve as its next Vice Chair for Clinical Operations (VC Clin Ops).

The VC Clin Ops is the department’s most senior operational leader responsible for overseeing all clinical operations across its diverse and high-acuity service lines. This includes direct oversight of anesthesiology services at the Johns Hopkins Hospital (JHH), Howard County ASC, and Knoll North ASC, and coordination across affiliated clinical sites, including Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, Howard County General Hospital, and the JHH Children’s Center.

This is a strategic leadership opportunity for a seasoned perioperative leader to impact systems of care, workforce models, operational efficiency, patient safety, and quality across one of the most complex and respected academic health systems in the world.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Strategic Leadership and Clinical Operations
  • Provide executive-level leadership and strategic direction for anesthesiology clinical operations across all practice sites.
  • Partner with division chiefs, residency and fellowship leadership, CRNA leads, and hospital partners to ensure safe, efficient, and equitable care delivery.
  • Align clinical operations with departmental goals, institutional mission, and evolving perioperative strategies.
Staffing and Workforce Optimization
  • Oversee provider scheduling to balance academic engagement, personal wellness, and clinical needs.
  • Drive continual evaluation of staffing models to ensure clinical efficiency without compromising safety.
  • Support division chiefs in recruitment, retention, and faculty wellness initiatives.
Quality, Safety, and Patient Experience
  • Collaborate with divisional, departmental, and hospital-based quality leaders to drive continuous improvement in safety, outcomes, and patient satisfaction.
  • Lead after-action reviews and proactively identify risks and opportunities for enhanced clinical performance.
  • Standardize best practices across divisions and clinical sites.
Operational Finance and Resource Stewardship
  • Partner with finance, coding, and revenue cycle leadership to align operational workflows with documentation, charge capture, and sustainable financial performance.
  • Monitor throughput and clinical productivity metrics to ensure operational reliability and efficiency.
  • Oversee equipment, supply chain, and infrastructure needs across sites in collaboration with technical and hospital partners.
Governance and Culture
  • Ensure transparent, fair, and structured processes for hiring, evaluation, and faculty accountability.
  • Develop and mentor emerging clinical leaders; implement succession planning initiatives.
  • Serve as departmental point person for clinical crisis management and operational disruptions.
QUALIFICATIONS

Ideal candidates will bring a record of excellence in perioperative leadership, a strong understanding of academic anesthesiology operations, and a demonstrated ability to lead in complex, matrixed environments.

  • MD or DO with board certification in Anesthesiology.
  • Eligibility for licensure in the State of Maryland.
  • Significant clinical and leadership experience in anesthesiology, preferably within an academic or multi-site health system.
  • Demonstrated success managing clinical operations, improving throughput and quality, and leading multidisciplinary teams.
  • Strong data fluency and the ability to leverage analytics and dashboards to inform decision-making.
  • Outstanding communication, emotional intelligence, and collaborative leadership skills.
  • Deep commitment to professionalism, equity, and building a supportive and high-performing culture.
