The VA Maryland Health Care System seeks a board-certified, fully licensed psychiatrist—preferably with fellowship training or experience in addiction psychiatry—to provide inpatient psychiatric care, consultation, psychopharmacologic management, and psychotherapy for veterans, including those with substance use and dual diagnoses. Duties include admitting and discharging patients, medical consultation across services, participation in committees and peer review, supervising advanced practice providers, and meeting education and competency requirements.

The Mental Health Clinical Center at the VA Maryland Health Care System seeks to recruit a fully licensed Psychiatrist with board certification to include fellowship training or experience with treating patients with substance use disorders (SUD).
PSYCHIATRY CORE CLINICAL PRIVILEGES: Psychiatric admission to inpatient unit, including work-up, diagnostic assessment, and provision of treatment; conduct risk and memory (MMSE/MoCA) assessments on patients using psychiatric principles; perform mental status examinations; perform AIMS; diagnose movement disorders; perform MMSE; make psychiatric diagnoses using current DSM and ICD criteria; provide psychiatric consultation to other providers on patients with mental, behavioral, or emotional disorders;
manage a full range of psychotropic medication; manage psychiatric issues in geriatric patients; manage patients with addictive disorders; perform supportive psychotherapy; perform eclectic cognitive psychotherapy; perform group psychotherapy; perform family and marital therapy; evaluation, admission, and detoxification of alcohol/opiate dependence.
Duties include, but are not limited to:
- Admitting patients from the Emergency Department and from other locations as well as handling direct admissions,
- Providing all aspects of care for hospitalized patients in the Medicine Service,
- Discharging patients from acute care to other levels of care within the Medical Center or to home, and/or transferring patients to other units within the hospital,
- Working with Advanced Nurse Practitioners and/or Physician Assistants
- Responsible for inpatient care and follow-up for patients admitted to the Medical Center.
- Responsible for medical consultation to inpatients admitted to other services.
- Perform administrative and committee work related to improving patient care and clinical outcomes as assigned.
- Remain in compliance with all educational, training, and competency requirements.
- Participate in Peer Review process and various other committees assigned.
- Participation and active involvement are expected in improvement of inpatient quality measures.
Preferred Experience and Certifications Reference:
- Fellowship training and/or certification in addiction psychiatry
- 2 years full time experience treating patients dually diagnosed with psychiatric and substance use disorders
- Experience treating patients with buprenorphine
- Experience treating patients with chronic pain syndromes
