The Baltimore Sun is looking for a sharp, fast-moving and proactive editor to launch morning news coverage and drive traffic to throughout the day. This position is the newsroom’s point of authority in the morning, responsible for making key editorial decisions, managing the emerging news staff and ensuring our journalism is accurate, timely and trusted.
This role requires hyper-alertness to news, urgency and keen judgment. This editor would be responsible for not only guiding stories from idea conception to final edit, but also writing compelling headlines, maximizing SEO, keeping digital channels updated and promoting our content on digital channels.
Essential Functions- Monitors breaking news and assigns, edits, and produces daily stories in varied formats.
- Leads real-time coverage of breaking news, including developing storylines, coordinating reporters and photographers.
- Oversees homepage curation, mobile alerts, newsletters, and some social media posts to ensure the organization’s journalism reaches audiences at the right time and in the correct format.
- Guides reporters on story development, ensuring the content is fair, balanced, and compelling.
- Uses audience analytics and news judgment to inform decisions on content assignments and engagement strategies.
- Plans site and audience strategies for upcoming news events.
- Coordinates with morning and day editors to ensure a smooth handoff and continuity of coverage.
- Works days, with shifts starting as early as 6 a.m.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
- A minimum of three years of professional reporting experience (daily journalism experience strongly preferred).
- At least two years of experience as an editor or producer in a digital news environment
- Excellent editing skills, with mastery of AP style, grammar, and headline writing.
- Demonstrated expertise in digital publishing, including SEO, social media, and audience analytics.
- Interest in or experience using artificial intelligence tools responsibly to support reporting, editing, research, verification or audience engagement.
- Proven ability to work quickly and accurately using a Web-based content management system.
Individual compensation may vary from the target range based on several factors, including experience, internal pay equity, and other relevant business considerations.
