Overview

As a Safety Professional, you will ensure the safety of employees, trade partners, and the public on our Mid-Atlantic projects. The Safety Professional is responsible for creating a culture of safety while enforcing Berg’s Safety and Health Policy, as well as local, state, and federal safety standards on jobsites. This role is actively engaged with multiple projects safety in partnership with project foremen and superintendents to develop and execute safe work plans for all phases and tasks.

A large percentage of this role is field related, and the individual will be utilizing a company provided vehicle to travel to projects in MD, VA and DC (no overnight travel required).

Responsibilities
  • Drive the Berg safety culture on each project (consistent field presence).
  • Oversee and ensure the safety of employees, subcontractors, other trade partners, and the general public.
  • Participate in pre-construction meetings with clients.
  • Enforce corporate and project specific safety and health programs as well as federal, state, and local safety standards.
  • Lead the review of specialized safety plans for subcontractors (i.e. crane, confined space, silica exposure control plans, asbestos abatement plans, etc.).
  • Partner with subcontractors to ensure all documentation is submitted timely.
  • Identify known or potential exposures and recommend corrective action.
  • Participate in lessons learned related to near misses, incidents, etc.
  • Assist Director of EHS with claims management and incident investigation associated with insurance related losses. Assist in managing employee injuries from initial claim to closure.
  • Partner with field supervision to ensure safety hazard mitigation measures are included in the planning of project activities related to demolition and hazardous materials abatement.
  • Develop project specific safety submittals in partnership with the Director of EHS and operations team.
  • Facilitate new hire safety orientations.
  • Facilitate classroom and hands on safety related training as needed (Forklift, MEWP, Silica, Fall Protection, Rigger and Signal Person, etc.).
  • Perform documented jobsite safety inspections on a consistent basis on current projects and work with the project teams to identify and correct hazards (Document in KPA EHS Management System).
  • Cultivate a network of industry relationships to bring potential business opportunities to Berg Leadership.
  • Cultivate industry relationships to help attract and recruit top talent to Berg.
Basic Qualifications
  • Relevant construction safety experience with an undergraduate degree in safety and health (or related discipline) or demonstrated construction safety and trade experience.
  • Ability to communicate and influence supervisors, peers, and external partners.
  • Proof of training and experience in managing crane, fall protection, excavation, scaffolds, asbestos, and heavy equipment safety.
  • Strength in managing multiple competing priorities in a deadline driven environment.
  • Alignment with Berg Core values and support of the Berg Mission and Vision Statements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • BCSP Qualifications (GSP, STSC, CHST, etc.)
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Instructor
  • Fall Protection Trainer
  • Silica Trainer
  • Asbestos Supervisor
  • Rigger and Signal Person Trainer
  • Demolition and Hazardous Material Abatement Experience
  • Berg will send the selected candidate for additional train the trainer certifications as needed (MEWP Trainer, Fall Protection Trainer, Silica Trainer, Rigger and Signal Person Trainer, etc.)

Work Environment
  • Work onsite, outdoors, in all weather conditions
  • The noise in these work environments is usually moderate to very loud.
