Position Summary

Sheriff's Detentions Deputy. Works within the Kern County Sheriff's Office. This is a continuous recruitment and may close at any time without notice. Applicants must attach all required certificates to their application or email them to Tiffany Nacke at

Recruitment Bonus

All employees hired on or after November 9, 2021, in a permanent capacity with the Sheriff's Office are eligible for a $15,000 recruitment bonus. The bonus shall be payable in full upon appointment by the Sheriff-Coroner-Public Administrator and is subject to completion of a 5‑year term of service as a Detentions Deputy or higher. Repayment schedule:

  • Less than 1 year of service – $15,000
  • Less than 2 years – $12,000
  • Less than 3 years – $9,000
  • Less than 4 years – $6,000
  • Less than 5 years – $3,000
Responsibilities
  • Assist in detentions duties as assigned.
  • Adhere to all physical, medical, psychological, and character requirements.
  • Participate in required background investigations and maintain eligibility for the appointment process.
  • Remain on the eligible list for up to twelve months following an offer of employment.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma, G.E.D. or equivalent.
  • Possession of a California Standards and Training for Corrections (STC) Certified Corrections Officer CORE course certificate issued within the past three years, or continuous employment under PC Section 831.5 or 830.1(c) in California since completion.
  • Possession of both PC 832 Arrest and PC 832 Firearms course certificates issued within the past three years; or possession of both certificates with continuous employment under PC Section 831.5 or 830.1(c) in California since completion.
  • Valid California Class C driver’s license at the time of employment.
  • Legally authorized to work in the United States under federal law.
  • Minimum age 18 at final filing date.
Physical and Psychological Requirements

Applicants must be free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition, including bias, that might adversely affect performance as a peace officer.

Medical Examination:
Required post‑employment offer, pre‑placement medical examination by the County Physician, including spine and chest X‑rays, blood chemistry, electrocardiogram, hearing and vision tests, and functional capacity assessment.

Psychological Examination:
Evaluation by a psychologist meeting the education and training requirements of the Commission of Peace Officer Standards and Training.

Character:
Thorough background investigation including fingerprinting. Applicants must have a reputation for honesty and trustworthiness. Felony convictions are disqualifying; most misdemeanor convictions are also disqualifying unless minor.

Benefits
  • Shift Differential: 7.5% of base pay for work between 9:00 PM and 7:00 AM.
  • Uniform Allowance: $1,300 annually, paid bi‑weekly.
  • Sheriff's Emergency Response Team (SERT) Special Assignment Pay: 5% of bi‑weekly base salary.
  • Detention Training Officer Pay: 5% of base salary while assigned.
  • Life Insurance: $20,000 per employee.
  • Bilingual Pay: $25 bi‑weekly for qualified employees; $50 per pay period for positions requiring bilingual skills.
  • Health Benefits:

    County contributes 80% of cost for all health plans.
  • EAP – No Cost.
  • Retirement Benefits – Tier 2B: 2% at age 50, with additional percentages for later retirement ages as defined by PEPRA.
  • Vacation: 13 days, increases annually.
  • Holidays: 12 paid holidays + 3 days of paid winter recess leave.
  • Sick Leave:
    Up to 12 paid sick days per year.
