Overview
The Regional Dean and Assistant DIO reports to the Interim Dean of the Morehouse School of Medicine and works closely with the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Affiliations. The role includes cross-country travel and a secondary reporting relationship to the Chief Administrative Officer of the More in Common Alliance and the Bakersfield Memorial Chief Medical Officer. Location is Bakersfield, CA.
Scope:
Reporting directly to the Interim Dean, with a matrixed reporting relationship to the Chief Medical Officer for the Common Spirit Bakersfield market, this position will establish a new MSM regional and remote campus in Bakersfield, California. The Regional Dean and Assistant DIO will have two primary roles: (1) lead the establishment of a regional medical campus in partnership with Bakersfield Memorial and Bakersfield Mercy Dignity hospitals and other external partners to provide the six core rotations needed for an LCME-accredited regional medical campus;
and (2) support oversight and administration of MSM s ACGME-accredited programs, ensuring compliance with ACGME Institutional, Common, and specialty/subspecialty program requirements. The role includes developing an inclusive GME community, overseeing five or more new GME programs and fellowships, and driving data-informed quality improvement across program and institutional metrics.
The Bakersfield Regional Dean and Assistant DIO represents the School of Medicine in external matters pertaining to Undergraduate and Graduate Medical Education in the Bakersfield market. The role collaborates with the Interim Dean, Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Affiliations, and CAO of the More in Common Alliance to support mission-based budgeting, strategic planning, and regional campus development. The position requires developing short- and long-range strategic goals and documentation for assigned areas.
The position works with other decanal leaders in medical education and educational affairs. The successful candidate will be an exemplary mentor committed to student success and to the development of faculty and staff.
Responsibilities- Work closely with faculty and staff to create and monitor central processes for the regional campus and rotation sites.
- Ensure excellence across core GME competencies as an institutional GME leader, including maintaining ACGME accreditation for the institution and its residency programs, and improving the Education Program.
- Develop and support Residency Program Directors; manage the GME budget and advocate for resources; oversee GME operations; monitor resident well-being; provide guidance on GME legal matters; and function effectively within the broader medical policy context.
- Develop as a GME leader, including creating new residency programs and overseeing rotations sites and regional campuses.
- Provide leadership, administration, and oversight of the developing regional campus; lead objectives and tactics to advance campus development.
- Provide day-to-day administrative support for the regional rotation site and campus, in collaboration with the Associate Dean for Academic Programs and Affiliations and the CAO; oversee external academic partnerships, affiliation agreements, and onboarding of faculty.
- Monitor continuous quality improvement to ensure compliance with ACGME/LCME standards for regional sites; evaluate, implement, and report on new academic partnerships.
- Participate in strategic plan development and monitor key local and regional relationships for targeted recruiting and philanthropic support for UME/GME and pathway programs.
- Collaborate with MSM pathways team and local/regional groups to establish pathway programs to expand the pool of competitive applicants.
- Clerkships: ensure best practices for systems, tools, and technologies used in clerkships and elective rotations; assist with development and maintenance of tools; conduct regular clerkship site visits with prepped materials.
