Location: Edwards/California City/Tehachapi (Rising Scholars), CA

Basic Function

Please Note:

Kern Community College District accepts applications for part-time, hourly faculty pools on a continuous basis.

Representative Duties

This course is an introduction to American Sign Language (ASL), a visual-gesture language used by the deaf community in the United States and Canada, and more importantly, focuses on the development of basic conversation skills emphasizing the culture and history of ASL through in-class and out of class requirements.

Identify and demonstrate finger spelling, numbers, and vocabulary at a beginning level.

Describe and demonstrate American Sign Language classifiers, grammar structure, facial expression, and body movement.

Compose ASL Gloss translation from English.

Explain basic cultural aspects of the Deaf.

Examine and show an understanding of history, culture, and civilization of the Deaf world.

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor degree and 2 years related professional experience OR Associate degree and 6 years related professional experience.

OR - The equivalent.

  • Ability to work effectively and harmoniously with colleagues in an environment that promotes innovation, teaching, learning and service to a diverse student population;
  • Ability to effectively work with students with a wide range of skills, motivations, academic, and vocational goals;
  • Ability to develop curriculum, including curriculum delivered via different modalities;
  • Ability to participate in recruitment and articulation activities with local schools, colleges and universities;
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing;
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain subject matter currency;
  • Ability to assess student learning outcomes;
  • Knowledge of computers and willingness to explore new technologies that would benefit the program;
  • Knowledge of and commitment to the California community college mission;
