Salary:
- Level I: $24.42 – $29.82/hour
- Level II: $27.80 – $33.94/hour
Under general supervision, assists judicial officers in an assigned courtroom or department by maintaining accurate records of court proceedings; controlling court calendars and scheduling hearings according to legal and procedural time constraints; acting as a liaison between judicial officers and legal counsel, court staff, interested parties and the general public to answer procedural questions; and addressing courtroom problems as they occur.
Distinguishing CharacteristicsJudicial Courtroom Assistant I/II is a flexible classification series. I is the entry level, with on‑the‑job instruction and moderate supervision. II is the journey level, with general supervision, full in‑court documentation duties, and a thorough knowledge of Superior Court rules and procedures. Advancement from I to II is possible without further examination upon supervisor recommendation and approval by the Court Manager and Human Resources Manager.
Responsibilities- Attends court sessions; maintains official record of court proceedings; takes rough minutes; administers oaths to witnesses, interpreters, jurors, and others as required; reads information to jury; reads verdicts; polls jurors as necessary.
- Prepares, assembles, processes, and maintains reports, logs, forms, and official documents generated from court proceedings.
- Enters data into computer systems and registers of action for court calendars, minutes, orders, motions, pleas, verdicts, sentencing, warrants, recalls, charges, etc.
- Acts as liaison between judge, attorneys, agencies, and the public; answers inquiries and provides information on court policies and procedures.
- Maintains assigned courtroom calendar; coordinates scheduling with presiding department and attorneys; sets and confirms dates.
- Tracks cases, monitors filing dates and timelines, and assembles reports to ensure the judge has appropriate records.
- Assists judge in jury selection and maintains jury records; orders jury panels; schedules jurors; calls/releases jurors; tracks peremptory challenges; processes jury expense claims.
- Maintains control of exhibits; receives, marks, tags, and stores exhibits; ensures proper security; releases/returns exhibits as appropriate.
- Reviews orders, filings, judgments, and other documents for accuracy; prepares and submits orders for judge’s signature or returns for corrections.
- Retrieves, verifies, and calculates claims for payment for court‑appointed attorneys, investigators, doctors, and others; submits claims to judge for signature.
- Types and copies documents; manages distribution of documents; checks status of cases; obtains files and information as needed.
- Manages courtroom flow to ensure efficient operation; checks‑in attorneys and litigants; verifies parties present; notifies jurors of time changes; answers courtroom phones; manages exhibits and subpoenaed material; requests interpreter services and special equipment.
- Prepares, controls, and distributes court calendars; schedules hearings; reviews case information; informs judicial officers of statutory time limits; schedules conferences.
- Acting as custodian of records; collects, file‑stamps, and processes documents; records orders; prepares and distributes all required forms and documents.
- Operates electronic recording equipment; prepares files for judicial review; maintains integrity and confidentiality of files; issues and recalls bench warrants; compiles statistical data.
- Communicates with judicial officers, counsel, staff, and the public; answers procedural questions; resolves courtroom problems; contacts agencies; prepares referrals; informs departments of rulings.
- Controls access to judicial officer; attends and assists in chambers.
- Assists in empanelment and management of juries; calls for jurors; tracks challenges; prepares Jury instructions and verdict forms; polls jurors; computes jury fees.
