The purpose of this position is to assist in the coordination, administration, and dispatch of single engine air tankers located at the ODF SEAT Base in Baker City, Oregon. This position serves as liaison to the agency with federal, state, and aviation vendors. As Oregon’s largest fire department, ODF's Fire Protection Program protects 16 million acres of forest. These lands consist of privately owned forests as well as some public lands, including state-owned forests and, by contract, USBureau of Land Management forests in western Oregon.

ODF's firefighting policy is straightforward:
Put out fires quickly at the smallest possible size. Most of the land protected by the agency is working forests that produce revenue and support jobs. It is crucial to prevent fire damage to the timber resource that is an essential element of Oregon aggressive approach to firefighting safeguards ecosystem values such as fish and wildlife habitats. Forest Officer

Minimum Qualifications

Forest Officer – Four seasons in wildland fire suppression

OR

Bachelor's degree in forestry or closely related natural resources field and one season of wildland fire suppression.

Must hold a current SEAT Manger Qualification in accordance of qualifications set fourth by the Oregon Department of Forestry and the PMS 310-1.

Note:

Successful applicants must take and pass the physical fitness Work Capacity Test at the arduous level if selected for employment.

You must obtain the Class B Warden certification within the trial service period

Note:

Applicants must be 18 years of age and have a valid driver’s license at the time of hire.

* We may consider applicants that do not have 4 seasons, or do not have the SEMG qualification, if not able to fill at the qualified level.

General Duties
  • Oversees the planning, scheduling and monitoring of ODF Single Engine Airtanker (SEAT) flights in coordination with the local dispatch center.

  • Determines flight information such as location, heading, radio contacts, frequencies, and possible hazards.

  • Maintains time and use records on aircraft and retardant/suppressant gel products.

  • Provides aircraft use and cost information to the appropriate unit, Incident Command Teams, Interagency Dispatch, Salem Protection Staff, and Cooperating agencies.

  • Understands and administers aircraft contracts in order to assist the State Aviation Unit Manager, or to serve as the State Aviation Unit Manager’s representative.

  • Must verify and ensure given information is correct and accurate in a timely manner in order to dispatch the air tanker(s) to the fire location and ensure safe aviation operations.

  • Organizing: Prioritizing tasks and maintaining clear and accurate documentation.

  • Safety: Identifying and mitigating risks and fostering a strong safety culture.
