Job Type: Full‑time;
Non‑exempt

Work Hours: Performs an eighty‑hour bi‑weekly schedule as determined by assigned shift. Required to be available evenings, holiday, and weekends as needed.

Work Setting: In‑person and Field Service Area

Travel: Required to travel by personal auto, One Legacy autos, and/or air to meeting sites and other locations.

Summary of Functions:

The Medical Examiner Donation Specialist (MEDS) is responsible for maximizing donation opportunities at all our partner coroner and medical examiner offices. The MEDS is also responsible for representing One Legacy to develop those relationships that will maximize the potential for organ, eye and tissue donation as well as assisting in determining if the tissue is suitable for recovery and transplantation. The MEDS is also responsible for gathering clinical information on all CME referrals from the referral facility and additional healthcare providers and will assist in donor allocation as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Essential Functions:

  • Accountable for coroner and medical examiner’s tissue referral and donation performance.
  • Performs screening at the coroner offices to identify potential donors.
  • Performs medical record review and qualifies a donor for recovery.
  • Collaborates and builds working relationships with Medical Examiner/Coroner/Sherriff staff.
  • Obtains CME release for donor recovery.
  • Performs Recovery Coordination as needed.
  • Performs all duties and responsibilities in compliance with One Legacy policies and procedures, the standards and regulations as outlined by the FDA, UNOS, CMS, and other applicable federal, state, and local laws.
  • Collaborates with One Legacy team members and key Medical Examiner and Coroner partners to provide real time referral support and assess the effectiveness of the donation process.
  • Collaborates with One Legacy team members and partners to develop and implement policies, procedures, and processes that maximize organ, eye, and tissue donation.

Required functions of the Medical Examiner Donation Specialist:

CME Screening:

  • Performs screening for potential donors at the Medical Examiner/Coroner facilities.
  • Gathers information from the coroner’s databases, medical records, and investigations reports.
  • Collaborates, builds, and maintains working relationships with Medical Examiner/Coroner staff.
  • Interviews pathologist and obtains COD and autopsy findings.
  • Coordinates with Coroner personnel on the recovery time logistics for specimen collection, autopsy scheduling, request for Photos/X-rays, and other processing to identify potential referrals.
  • Performs physical exam of potential donors.
  • Performs specimen collection and request for specimen hold release.
  • Obtains authorization to recover on consented tissue donors for transplant/research within the CME/Coroner jurisdiction.
  • Collect coroner post‑recovery follow up information, such as autopsy report/COD/Investigation, reports as requested by Donor Information Department or Eye Bank Operations.
  • Conducts interviews of investigator or pathologist consult on recovered donors as requested by Donor Information Department or Eye Bank Operations.
  • Communicates in real time with various departments throughout the organization regarding organ and tissue donation.
  • Enters screening information into Electric Medical Records system.
  • Reports referral to the Family Care Center departments for approach.
  • Communicates with Eye Bank staff regarding autopsy scheduling.
