Job Type: Full-time;
Non-Exempt

Work Hours: Shifts are 10 hours; 6:00pm-4:00am and 1:00pm-11:00pm. Tuesday through Saturday or Sunday through Thursday. Assigned days and/or shift can be changed according to staffing needs. Must be available evenings, holidays, and weekends as required.

Summary of Functions

The Ocular Recovery Technician (ORT) is responsible for the surgical recovery of donated human ocular tissues used in transplantation. The ORT performs aseptic surgical recovery of human ocular tissue, including but not limited to corneas and whole eyes. The ORT performs medical chart review, plasma dilution review, medical screening criteria review, and qualifies donor for recovery eligibility. The ORT also performs housekeeping and the facility cleaning/maintenance such as cleaning, disinfecting, mopping, and taking the trash out for both clinical and nonclinical spaces.

Performs all other duties as assigned by management.

Responsibilities
  • Ocular Recovery:
    Aseptic surgical recovery of ocular tissue in accordance with OL Policies and Procedures.
  • Donor qualification:
    Review all relevant source documents for recovery eligibility (authorization, medical social history questionnaire, medical chart, coroner documentation, investigation report, tissue referral summary, case comments, processor recovery criteria).
  • Preforms physical examination.
  • Donor blood draw and plasma dilution assessment.
  • Facility site assessment and preparation for recovery.
  • Donor reconstruction and verification of steps including recovery paperwork, packaging, labeling, and shipping.
  • Labeling and labeling verification; packaging and shipping tissue to processors.
  • Assemble and maintain donor chart documentation; document recovery in Electronic Medical Records system.
  • Communicate findings during medical chart review or physical examination to Family Care Coordinator and Supervisor-on-Call as appropriate.
  • Respond timely to chart corrections.
Triage
  • Receive incoming referral calls from One Legacy donation partner facilities for eminent and cardiac death referrals.
  • Obtain pertinent clinical information to determine donor eligibility for recovery.
  • Escalate questions to Tissue Leadership for information that may alter acceptance or rejection of the donor.
  • Transfer calls as needed and review referrals requiring additional eligibility screening or follow-up.
  • Document clinical information in the Electronic Medical Records system; verify donor registry.
Ocular Preceptor/Trainer
  • Train ocular recoveries for tissue operations; conduct didactic and wet lab ocular trainings.
  • Submit status reports on trainees and provide feedback; complete training documentation.
Case Coordination/Logistics/Case Set-up
  • Coordinate recovery arrangements with recovery facility.
  • Set up transportation of donor; obtain CME release for recovery.
  • Screen and accept ocular tissue for recovery; perform other logistical tasks as instructed by management.
Donor Receiving and Releasing

Assist with logistics and coordination of transportation of donors to a One Legacy facility for recovery. Perform the receiving and releasing of donors in the One Legacy Recover Facility from partners such as but not limited to transport companies, coroner offices, or funeral homes.

Facility Cleaning and Materials Management
  • Facility cleaning (cleaning, disinfecting, mopping) in various spaces including Supply Depot, Recovery OR, Morgue, Pre-Prep Staging room, tissue shipping/lab room, coroner office recovery suite, etc.
