Overview

Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust (BHT) have a new post available for a Specialty Doctor in Colorectal Surgery for 6 months with the potential to be extended for a further 6 months. This post is available to start from March 2026. This post will be based across two hospital sites, Stoke Mandeville Hospital, Aylesbury & Wycombe Hospital, High Wycombe. The Colorectal Unit and the Department of General Surgery at BHT have a long history of employing high calibre specialist medical staff in a variety of roles to help deliver ongoing continuous care to the patients of Buckinghamshire.

These have previously consisted of SAS and Trust Grade Registrars at different levels of expertise and in different types of roles, and they have also evolved over time. Currently we have an opportunity to create a full-time, fixed term (6 months minimum) Specialty Doctor role to continue providing specialist colorectal within the Colorectal Unit. The role encompasses different specialist colorectal skill sets and provides important services to colorectal patients.

The Colorectal Unit in Buckinghamshire Healthcare consists of five full time colorectal surgeons, providing all aspects of elective colorectal specialisms, including colorectal and anal cancer surgery, with a very high proportion of these being performed laparoscopically, and since 2022 also robotically.

  • The job plan can be adjusted with notice/ negotiation to fulfil the needs of the colorectal unit and to take into account of the developing expertise and on going training of the successful candidate. The successful candidate will be encouraged and supported with pathway changes to improve the service, which may mean the job plan above evolves during the contract period.

    The intention is for this post to set up a system of vetting suitable patients straight to test and avoid clinic consultation, setting up proctology services alongside those in existence to manage suitable FDS referrals and others and spend time developing and improving our FDS pathway. This position is mostly clinic and office based and requires knowledge of the colorectal surgical pathway and management of patients within the NHS in 2026.

    Career development time is specifically set aside to allow other skill development in colorectal surgery. This position does not include on call commitments. The candidates will need to possess the ability to learn new skills, demonstrate innovation and be willing to adapt to the requirements of the colorectal unit over time.
