Advertisement OverviewWe are seeking a Special Education Teacher for a Career Service position located at Avon Park Correctional Institution in the Education Department. The mission of the Bureau of Education at the Florida Department of Corrections is to provide comprehensive educational programs and services to inmates, enhancing academic, vocational, and life skills to promote successful reintegration into society.
Job Duties- Provide special education services and teach academic subjects to students with disabilities in a correctional facility.
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) for students with disabilities, conduct IEP meetings, and maintain meticulous documentation.
- Conduct transition planning, make referrals, and coordinate with institutional staff and external agencies to ensure seamless support.
- Deliver specialized instruction, assist teachers with accommodations and modifications, and monitor student progress.
- Participate in professional development activities and maintain Professional Educator Certification with an Exceptional Student Education endorsement.

Beginning July 1, 2024, no reemployment limitation; members may work for an FRS employer after 7 full months of distribution without restricting prior distributions.
- Additional $1,499.94 annually for applicants with a master’s degree (official transcripts).
- One‑time $1,000 hiring bonus for possession of a temporary or professional teaching certificate.
- Bachelor’s degree or higher from an accredited college/university.
- Possess or be eligible to apply for a Temporary Florida Department of Corrections Educator’s Certificate or a temporary State of Florida Educator's Certificate.
- Successful applicants will be issued a Florida Department of Corrections CTE Temporary Educator’s Certificate; must obtain the Department of Corrections Educator’s Professional Certificate within 5 years of issuance.
- Pass the Exceptional Student Education (K12) Subject Area Exam within 12 months of hire.
All applicants must pass a Level 2 background check as required by Chapter 435, Florida Statutes before beginning work.
