The Texas General Land Office is seeking a Programmer VI (Principal Software Engineer) within the Information Technology Services Department of the agency. The role is a senior technical leader responsible for designing, developing, and delivering high‑quality, scalable, and secure software solutions across multiple enterprise applications and domains.
Responsibilities:
- Lead the design, architecture, and coding of complex, high‑impact systems using technologies such as C#, Java, Python, and cloud‑native platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP). Ensure solutions are scalable, maintainable, and aligned to agency priorities. Write and review production‑grade code, setting and enforcing engineering best practices. Support application operations including defect resolution, incident response, dependency management, and code management.
- Define and uphold technical standards, secure coding practices, and mature SDLC processes across engineering teams. Drive the adoption of microservices, API‑first, and event‑driven architectures. Lead technical debt management and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Act as a bridge between engineering, business stakeholders, IT leadership, product management, and compliance teams. Translate complex technical requirements into actionable plans and communicate technical concepts clearly to non‑technical audiences.
- Mentor developers and engineers across teams, fostering continuous learning and a culture of engineering excellence. Facilitate knowledge sharing, code reviews, and training.
- Research, evaluate, and recommend new tools, platforms, and technologies such as AI/ML, server‑less hosting, low‑code/no‑code platforms, and blockchain solutions.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems or related field, or equivalent professional experience (one year of experience for each year of education).
- Minimum of 7 years progressive professional experience in software engineering or enterprise application delivery.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Expertise in custom application development using modern technologies (Java, C#, Python, Go, etc.).
- Experience designing scalable, maintainable, high‑performance systems.
- Understanding of cloud‑native development and modern application architectures.
- Experience with legacy modernization and hybrid integrations.
- Strong coding, standards, and best‑practice ownership.
- Lifecycle ownership from design through deployment.
- Collaboration with engineering teams to align with enterprise goals.
- Advocacy for cloud‑first strategies.
- Mentoring and cultivating engineering excellence.
Location Requirements: This position is based in Austin, TX. Candidates must currently be located in the Austin area or be willing to relocate at their own expense. Relocation assistance is not provided.
Physical Requirements: Sedentary office work with routine mobility and ability to handle up to 20 lb of material.
