Juvenile Residential Treatment Officer Assistant

Travis County Juvenile Probation Department (TCJPD) is looking to hire a part‑time temporary Juvenile Residential Treatment Officer Assistant. The role supports Residential Treatment Officers who provide direct supervision and treatment intervention for post‑adjudicated juvenile clients in a multidisciplinary program serving a general residential population, a Girls Secure Program, and a Youthful Offender Program. The position requires a non‑traditional work schedule, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.

Shift options are 6:00 AM–2:00 PM, 2:00 PM–10:00 PM, and 10:00 PM–6:00 AM.

Distinguishing Characteristics

This classification assists in providing supervision to clients placed in the juvenile residential facility by the court system. It is routine in nature and typically performed under the supervision of a higher‑level staff member. The role may require work in secure facilities and a flexible schedule.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist in providing direct supervision of all client daily activities, maintaining accountability of clients and equipment, and ensuring a safe, clean and secure environment.
  • Assist in assessing juveniles and implementing treatment plans, corrective disciplinary strategies, and effective treatment interventions.
  • Ensure clients understand their responsibilities and appropriate behavior.
  • Document client behavior and enter data into the department computer information system.
  • Assist in physically restraining aggressive clients as required, following approved protocols.
  • Transport clients to other facilities as needed.
  • Maintain communication with other staff to ensure continuity of care.
  • May assist in providing individual and crisis intervention counseling, conducting cognitive skill groups, teamwork activities, and investigating incidents involving clients.
  • Perform other job‑related duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience: High School diploma or GED, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that satisfies the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or

Special Requirements
  • At least 21 years of age.
  • Certification as a Juvenile Detention Officer or eligibility for certification within six (6) months of hire, including successful completion of CPR, First Aid and Handle with Care (state‑approved physical restraint technique).
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of court system policies, procedures, laws, and juvenile justice standards.
  • Understanding of psychological concepts, counseling techniques, safety and security protocols, restraint techniques, first aid, and HIPAA.
  • Skill in monitoring client behavior, problem solving, interviewing, and written & verbal communication.
  • Ability to work efficiently independently or as part of a team, make sound judgments, manage stressful situations, handle aggressive individuals, organize tasks, conduct investigations, and maintain professionalism.
Work Environment & Other Information

Physical requirements include lifting/carrying up to 50–100 pounds, standing, walking, climbing stairs, and other duties. The role is in a stressful environment with frequent client and public contact. Work hours align with the shift schedule and may include holidays, nights, and weekends.
